How do you answer the question "Where are you from?"

That has always been a complicated one for us. My husband is originally from NY, I was born and raised in KY. Both of our families relocated to Florida and that is where we met and married. But then.....he joined the Navy and we lived lots of different places, longest (16 years) in CA and that is where our kids still are. But we have been the last 12 years in Baltimore and that is where we will leave from to go cruising. So......where are we from? We have been trying to figure that out ourselves for quite some time.

I start with... "I live on a sailboat, my boat is currently in (insert bay or harbor here)".

Unless you enjoy long explanations, it always seems easy to just say; "we are on vacation " Where from? Give your home location or past location.

It depends upon what is really asked (or the intent of the question) and who is asking... Officials get answers that match our paperwork...

Casual version:

Where are you from? Alaska

Where do you live? On our boat...

Where's the boat? ...

3 possible options.

1. Where do you think I am from (then say yes!)

2. Where would you like me to be from. That will do.

3. Tell them you are a Sea Gypsy. Yesterday there, today here, tomorrow, who knows?

We simply say, "We're from wherever the boat is now and right now it's _____________." Easy, and it has been our answer for over 25 years. Sometimes they will then ask where we are from originally and we tell them. Chuck

response is normally 'you don't have much of an accent'...

1976, friends working in Rarotonga flew out to NZ (3 hrs DC8) with their 2 young daughters to join us with our 2 young daughters sailing our 20' trailer sailer around the sheltered waters of NZ Bay of Islands. So 8, POB, sailing / motoring around and them camping in a pup tent ashore every night.
When ashore someone surveying the scene asked one of our friends "Where are you from?" Innocently she replied "From Rarotonga". She wondered why she received strange looks and gasps of amazement from the passer by.
