Holy Proboscis Batman We Have Weevils

Oh Wise Ones, I haven't posted much since we started cruising 3 years ago, but CF is always are go to source when we have a problem and I certainly have one now. In the craziness of getting the boat ready to leave her on her own while we went back to the States for three months, I overlooked two boxes of whole wheat pasta (one open). We came back to an invasion of weevils. I have gotten rid of the pasta and anything else that was suspect and vacuumed and washed everything down. Friends looking after our boat noticed them (thought they were ants) and bombed the boat. They reported many dead, but we still have more live ones. Anyone know how to rid the boat of these pests or am I doomed to live with them forever? There is no food source on the boat for them now. Can the larvae develop without a known food source? Thank you for your help!

I wasn't sure where to post this, so admins feel free to move it.

Put a whole bay leaf in any container that might develop weevils. Should solve the problem.

In addition to everything you've already done, I'd get a couple lizards (geckos)

What about the ones wandering around the boat?

Nick and LA, I haven't seen any geckos I could kidnap back to the boat here in Grenada.

Put Bay leaves in each cabinet and storage place as well as in the containers.

Bay leaves it is! Does that kill them or just make them go someplace else?

And where would that someplace else be? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't know but after getting a box of cereal that was infested I put bay leaves in my cupboards and haven't seen any since.

Re: Holy Proboscis Batman We Have Weevils

I never found bay leaves did any good. If the eggs are there, the larvae follow.

Something I would try is allethrin mosquito coils. That just might do it. Otherwise, keep vacuuming them up and drowning the vacuumings. Eventually, you'll get rid of 'em. It's always better when you're at the boat and can take immediate action.

The next thing I'd try is some cockroach surface spray. I'd hate using it belowdecks, but I couldn't really live happily with constant weevils.

One time we came home to a weevil infestation, where they had died, and were a horrid soupy mess. I wound up burning incense in those lockers, after it was all cleaned up and nothing else I tried got rid of the stench.

Good luck with it, what a PITA!

Ann

Never tried but would a greenhouse / sulphur candle work?

Place on metal tray in middle of cabin - close all vents etc, light it and retire for a couple of hours.

Freeze the new unopened flour/rice/etc package (3 - 4 days) before storing. Then bay leaves.
