I once had a very large guy (weighed about 400 pounds) holding on to a teak hand hold tear it right in half , when we hit a wave- What a suprice that was, now i use only stainless steel hand holds with backings- and no 400 pounders are welcome..sadly

how did you place teh backing? on the opposite side of the bulkhead?

I was kinda wondering how fasteners work in fiberglass... or is there imbedded wood in certain locations...

The hand hold that was torn out , I was able to put large washers on the back side of the "bulkhead"

yea, i can see that will work a little but it is still only as strong as the fiber glass and area of teh washer... (i.e. it would not be acceptable for handi cap grab bars...)

I will be figuring out how they install nailers/blocking and hold downs and engine mounts and all that stuff soon enuf

i had a female try to board my boat--was a friend of a friend-- she grabbed my stanchion at the weakest point and pulled her 220 pounds up and pop! dislocated the stanchion from the deck-- seems the restorer used lag bolts in the deck-- so i got to fill hole--now i watch as folks board--no pulling on stanchions....

You should thank your friend for finding the lag bolt issue for you. I mean, even if you never get around to replacing the lag bolts, at least you know how much can... or can't... count on your stanchions.

stanchions are always a false safety, i learned without --i use mine too much-- but i try to never count on them as stanchions willbreak away when fallen on, but not before making a helluva mess on the deck. i really have mixed feelings on them...
omg idi say i learned from age 7 on a gaff rigged sloop without stanchions to contain the kids from falling ob???? omg-- child endangerment-- call a dcs agent--- omg.....there were heavy weights on this one when we were little--but only if they fit in the leaky old rowboat

What I can never understand is.....
Why do people ALWAYS LEAN BACKWARDS when they climb on board... be it up a swim ladder or stepping up from a pontoon..
They grab hold of something, place their feet and then throw their weight in the opposite direction....
No matter how many times I've shown people how much easier it is... staying as erect as possible and using legs and arms/hands in conjunction to get on board.... 95% of the time next time they come it just the same... the boat heels over and gear creaks under the strain.... and that 'Oh ****..!!' look appears on their faces...
And Mine,,,,

Thanks for the how to, Boatman. I am still a landlubber with no sealegs, but I would like to make a poised entrance on my honey´s boat and only fall into his arms at the airport haha.

What's a politically correct way to tell the guy sitting on the starboard pulpit seat in the pic below to "Please do not sit there." Seriously, could any boat owner not look and be consumed with worry about the damage caused when it collapses?

Hey.... Have a great time when you get there.... and I'm pretty damn sure he'd be happy to have you fall into his arms anytime.. anywhere..

Tell both guys, backboard and starboard to move as seat is not designed to take more weight than a child ? Design fault of the boat ,not related to any personal attributes of occupant of seat.

"Excuse me Sir.... would you mind lying down... your blocking my view of that reef we're approaching...."

I could have said 'Island'... but I don't want him to get the point

Getting old and bad bones and joints

Mark sounds like you have your boat fixed for me ! I've got to do a few things like that to mine 2 bad discs in my back it does make it tough on a lot of people my stanchions are tall and tough but you still need more to grab and hold on to I thought it might look crappy by putting stainless handicap grabs on my boat but then again I am handicap so what the heck and I won't have to varnish them.
