Re: Ever give up Booze?

Um... When you took your "vacation" from the booze, where did you hide it from yourself? Just curious... Not that I would ever think of visiting your hiding place, or anything like that... You know... I'm just curious... maybe I could just check on your stash every now and then, just to make sure that no one has snuck in for a little nip. I would do this as a favor to you. You know, kind of like a real friend, or something (hickburp)

Re: Ever give up Booze?

hmmm and I thought when I got a boat I'd reduce my consumption of wine and beer because I couldn't just pop down to Costco and get some cheap or reasonably priced nice red. Although it could never compare with Dan Murphy's in Oz.

If anyone is interested, the Chief Public Health officer in Canada just released a report on alcohol and it's effects in Canada. Contains some interesting facts, especially in relation to cancer risk.

The Chief Public Health Officer's Report on the State of Public Health in Canada, 2015: Alcohol Consumption in Canada

My wife insisted that I tell my doctor how much I drink at my last physical. I indicated I probably average over two glasses of wine a night. Imagine my wife's surprise and being pissed off at the doctor when he said I could probably be OK with four drinks a night! (although I don't quite believe him).

My liver is doing great. I put it down to my even greater consumption of coffee, it apparently helps keep your liver in order- see link

Coffee may protect against liver cirrhosis - Medical News Today

Cheers, foz

Re: Ever give up Booze?

I quit drinking in 1980. It took two years of trying. I'm lucky, I've never smoked.

I go into taverns often. I drink ginger ale or orange juice. A good tavern doesn't care what you drink, and it doesn't fizz on my hostess friends that I drink pop or juice, they just want to be sure I have something nice to drink. I'm in the tavern beside the marina now, for the wifi. I tip heavily because you have to pay for the space you occupy, and I don't try to relate to people who've had two drinks.

If you search on 'fastest addicting drugs' you'll get an eye opener, like this....

6. Marijuana
5. Caffeine
4. Alcohol
3. Cocaine
2. Heroine
1. Nicotine in cigarettes

The 6 Most Addictive Substances on Earth : Drug Abuse News – Drug Treatment Blog – Drugs News

That is, these are all empty (meaning they have no redeeming virtues) addictive drugs, and the fastest and strongest addicting drug is nicotine in cigarettes.

You take some wine with thy meals for thy stomach's sake, well see here, how can something that dulls your taste buds on contact enhance your enjoyment of fine food??

Re: Ever give up Booze?

Abridged version - under the fair use concept. Full article via link below.

Just Say No. To Drunk Posting.

Once upon a time, you could get drunk and the only people who would know about it were the people getting drunk with you. In that same room. That’s all. And chances are no one would remember the next day so there was no shame involved.

Then the telephone was invented. You could go out and get star spangled hammered and come home and somehow think calling your ex was a good idea. For years the drunk dial was the most humiliating thing you could do while intoxicated.

Enter 2016. With the internet. With the phone in your pocket. With the internet on the said phone. With the camera. With the video camera.

Regardless of who wins, time expires in the Superbowl and I'm done drinking. Gotta lose weight this year and I think foregoing beer should shed more than 50 lbs.

There's a reason they cale it a beer belly.

Re: Ever give up Booze?

Just for curiosity sake, I just googled up how many people die from alcohol related issues vs guns. I was surprised to see that alcohol kills three times as many people as firearms in civilian hands. Alcohol is the number two killer after automobiles.

Society pays a heavy price for alcohol use. Accidents, illness, lost productivity, ruined families and childhoods, relationships. Deaths.

My first ex died from alcohol abuse. She was pretty much drinking straight vodka at the end. When her son literally lifted her and took her to the hospital, the doc gave her three days to live. She was bloated and yellow and almost unrecognizable from the pretty thing I married at 22. Both her liver and kidneys were failing, and she had "wet brain".

She made it almost a month once they got her stabilized and drained etc. She was in denial about alcohol being a problem until the very end. She would say "Look at my mother. She drinks a bottle of scotch a day and she's fine. I'll just cut back a bit." She was 59, six years ago. Her death really affected our sons.

And two weeks ago we heard about a long time friend who was hospitalized, alcohol poisoning, she's down to about 80 Lbs. She left the hospital and skipped the rehab suggestions. Ran off back to Nicaragua, where she can continue to drink herself to death in peace.

From my observations and substantial lifelong experience with the stuff, I think that if you ever even ask yourself if you might have a drinking problem, then you most likely are on that path. If someone else ever asks if you have a drinking problem, you probably do.

For people without the addiction switch in their brain chemistry, their drinking never becomes an issue in anyone's mind.
