Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

Sold a perfectly good 45' 1954 Chris-Craft and bought a 1980 Catalina 22 sailboat. (Last week sailing solo with 15-18kts gusting to 55+ was brutal on my old body)

Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

Fun isn't the word I'd use for that little 14 hour adventure. (Was expected to be about a 2-3 hour sail in great conditions.) A ton of learning was done in a short time. Other than bruises and scrapes, no damage to me. Several hours with my sewing kit has repaired the sail damage. No other damage to the boat. (Lucky) Only got knocked down once. Had there been someone else on board, this would have just been a thrilling experience.
Tried to get off the water when the front came through, but my iron jib is too small to safely manouver in that kind of wind. Also, the docks at the ramp were blown off their anchors and were washed up onto the ramps, closing them.
Spent the night on the other side of the lake in the lee of a canyon wall until the dockes were repaired Monday morning.

Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

Purchased an antique vessel. Got her for $20k & thought it was a steal.

What was I thinking???

I'm too embarrassed to tell you how much I've already paid - & she's still at the yard, so the bills keep coming.

She's real pretty, though. :-)

Is it the Elco? I virtually grew up on a 35' Cruisette. Fine boat a little round belled in a beam sea. Best of luck with your restoration.

Fell in love with the ocean, and tried to make a decent living going to sea.

Cadence - Yes, she's the Elco - a rare 1930 Marinette 27'. I think there are only 2 on the planet. They didn't make a lot of them.

And most are probably gone if more had been made. Elco made a damn good boat. I Guess WWII put then into the PT boat business. Then bought out to make subs at their location.

I don't have what it takes to maintain a wooden boat. Best of luck to you.

Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

It's interesting re the Elco WWII effort. I named Starside after I saw a Coast Guard list of all the private yachts that were volunteered for the war effort. There were so many Elco's! Most had names like Elco Hull #23. The CG actually kept tabs on the yachts...most didn't make it beyond the 50's but there was one Elco named Starside that they tracked all the way into the 70's. I decided that was a good name. :-)

Re: Dumbest thing you ever did?

Dumbest thing lately was making some teak cabinetry on my table saw and got my non-dominant left index finger slightly too close to that part that goes around and around. Interesting thing is that i use power tools frequently, generally am pretty safe, accept risks without thinking much about it and am not "superstitous" or have much regard for such ideas. But last night before it happened, I had a premonition, just a thought that I would get hurt.

Just nipped my fingertip, trimmed my nail longitudinally back about halfway, not meat lost although my nail may be a little goofy. Bandaid. Could have been a lot worse. Mostly humiliating for being so stupid and careless. Have not had the guts to tell anyone yet.
