Do You Wander Down and Look at . . .

when a new boat ventures into the harbor or marina, do you wander down and see what they have done to their boat? Was caught staring the other day, another 52 relocated to the marina we are in. I wandered down the other evening, looking for hints on how they did things, making mental notes, when I heard a chuckle. Turns out the other owner was looking at mine, making the same mental notes... Quess everyone is looking to see if it was right or ? Very true with older boats that have been changed over and over.

I don't even have a boat yet and I do this!

Around here though the marinas are very stand offish with signs everywhere telling non-owners to stay off the docks and such. Knowing how suspicious the locals seem to be of everyone and already having had a couple run ins with the local law enforcement community just by riding my bike, I tend to stay away.

It's too bad though, when I lived in New Orleans I used to walk around the marinas all the time checking out boats and talking with the owners. Helped out with a lot of repairs and enjoyed quite a few cold beers by just saying hi to people there. Also learned a lot about different boats.

Worse. I regularly cruise Yachtworld and other sites and minutely examine all the posted pictures of Pearson 39's. Inside and out. I have been known to save the pic and blow it up in photoshop to see how the halyards are run or how the forepeak berth certer fill is stored

Besides, it is always fun to recogonize and older boat and complement the owner on it. Especially when it is out of it's normal geo. area.

It's great to get the smile and " How did you know it's a______ ."

Every time the Big Boat Series happens on the SF Bay, I take the time to check out the new racing technologies. Neat stuff!

We don't wander down the marnia.....

When we are in the dinghy and Nicolle noticesa new boat in the anchorage we just go over to them and she yells out "Hey your boat looks nice! Can we come on for a tour?"

We have never been knocked back yet!

Everyone is just too pleased to be able to show off their boats

It kinda helps that we are off a boat.

We were at this island for about 6 weeks recently with many boats transiting through towards the start of the rally we are going in..... we must have been on 30 boats!

Its also a great way to get to know people because, of course, we invite them for moring tea on our boat too

I agree with Drew and others!! Since I don't have a boat yet, that is the best research resource around, the marina. Where else can you get a myriad of such varied boats in one spot?! If you go to a brokerage, they only have their set lines of boats, in marinas, they are of all ages, sizes and shapes!!

I nearly plan any available time, which is very little, to go have coffee at the marina and just walk around and get more comparative research done!!
