The Sea is alive — I’m not quite so sure about boats.

Re: Do Sailors have Animism ?

I'm not sure if names add personality, or if they have so much personality you just have to give them a name.

I had a 23 ft sailboat I called 'Pickpocket', and she sure did.

But long before the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy made Tolkien a household name (again), I had a 33ft sloop I called 'Bilbo'.

More than once I gave the name on VHF and got a long, quizzical silence followed by "..... Dildo??"

Literary heathens.....

And my Beemer is 'The Bison'.

Re: Do Sailors have Animism ?

Yeh, I'm one of those who talk to their boat, and call her a she. I watch old ships and boats go to the boneyard, and to me they are dying and being dismembered.

I first heard that song in 1978. I still get tears in my eyes for some strange reason.

Many years ago, I read a book about voyaging under sail, and to this day can't remember the name of it. But what I do remember is this paraphrasing of an old Spanish poem about pirates

My ship is my all,
My only god,
My life,
My liberty.

Yeh, they have a soul.

+1 My boat is a she with a great personality. She is WAY more maintenance than I am!

Our post-arrival ritual involves a drink (usually alcohol) to Neptune -'cheated death one more time'!

My Mitsubishi is Mitzy at times & the Battle Cruiser when heading out on he freeway. I also talk to Jill the GP but that's the name of the voice. Radar is the radar detector. He & Jill are having a fling. I think I'm spending far too much time in the car

Oh, & my lime green kayak is Ol' Booger. Wasn't my 1st choice of colors!

Re: Do Sailors have Animism ?

Everything is imbued with spirit, if you choose to welcome it. Animism is not the same thing as anthropomorphisation. Spirit isn't limited to human perception despite the possibility of it's perception by humans. Ask a cat what it sees. How exactly did you know who was calling? Ships are spirited to be sure; she or it, as you will. Conversely, one could choose science and facts and paperwork and rubber stamps as the only way to see the world and limit oneself to that 2 dimensional snore.

Re: Do Sailors have Animism ?

Well, I have to admit that our boat is an animate object. She is definitely a she. Besides being named for our daughter, she seldom listens to me, she responds well to having massive amounts of money spent on her, she requires a beauty salon visit on a regular basis, and she is always telling me where to go. However, I love her nonetheless!

Re: Do Sailors have Animism ?

It might be fun to romanticize the vessel with the thought of having a spirit or soul, but it's a complex fabricated machine to me. We do refer to our autopilot as "Miss Piggy", but not with any serious attribution of life. Where would it end? Would dinghies and kayaks have the same esteem? I've had the same can-opener for thirty years. Does it need some recognition? Should I name my nail clippers?

Yes, but if you don't love her, then how do you bring yourself to spend ridiculous amounts to time and resources on a mere collection of parts?

I guess I had a love/hate relationship with my last boat. Still newlyweds with the current one.

'easy answer,- I don't! I take the minimal time to keep my vessel sound and functional with some attendance to appearance. I replaced the wood that would require "brightwork care" with starboard plastic. I don't think I spend as much time working on my boat as those with houses spend with "housework" and I haven't mowed a lawn since the spring of 1965. My boat is a tool for my pleasure,- I'm not a slave to an imagined quality of the vessel.
