Confession: Haven't told boss I'm quitting to go sailing

I have to make a confession... I haven't told my boss yet that I am quitting to go sailing in the Caribbean for a couple of years.

Was made a Director in March.... now I am too scared to tell them we are heading out to go sailing in November.

I wouldn't either - until September at the earliest! Congratulations on your promotion but what we are all (well just those that haven't left yet) really envious of is what happens in November. Good luck!

Yeah, thats what I am thinking as well..September... waiting until, if they do say "Leave Now" I can walk away and just keep going.

Tell the boss by September. Also, make sure no one finds out your plan before then and reports to the boss.

I did the same thing, Then was abused for the last two weeks
Now I'm back in the real world and thinking about doing it all over again.

If you were recently made a director, it is because someone recognises and respects your intelligence.
It it your life, you only have one, and just as an employer generates advantages off of your services, you also have the right to determine your satisfactions.
Your conscience will be clear if you start now to recognise and encourage skills in others whom you might recommend.
A good boss will appreciate this-a bad one can KYA anyway.

I will definitely give them enough time to replace me... and as it is, there are a couple of underlying’s that have some great potential.

Its difficult , as you said Blue, knowing they have instructed me with a certain level of respect, and yet I will not be giving them the years that they are hoping to get out of me.

BUT, on the other hand I look at some of my fellow colleagues who have worked and worked for years and there is NO WAY their bodies would allow them to go off sailing.

It’s a tuff conundrum.

If you are a Director level, you should give them 60-90 days, unless it's a really wierd environment. I would tell the boss, and ask him to keep it as quiet as possible for a while, as you still want to do your job well in the meantime. He should appreciate that logic. I did this when I went for my first "retirement". When I was done cruising that time, I got hired back and promoted! OH.... and they paid tohave my boat delivered part way back!

If a normal working guy, lower in the food chain , I would recommend 2 weeks notice as being fine. Any more than that doesnt seem to work too well, people write you off, suspect you, etc... as you move up the food chain, I think more is expected.

Also, consider staying a year longer. I know that will be an unpleasant decision, but a little extra cash can only help you. Maybe you can take a month off in Dec/Jan to spend some time on the water, then come back.

It will be good for your career, good for your company, and should be good for your finances, though I certainly understand if you go through with it anyway.

Yeah.... I got coerced into staying a year longer after giving notice, but negotiated a 6 week vacation to do it.. That gives them time to try out the person who might replace you..(if he/she's
in-house) win-win situation. Sometimes I wish I had stayed longer as suggested....
