Carrying a Knife Is a Good Thing . . .

So just my 3rd time out single-handed sailing my first boat... & lessons learned!

1. Don't tie the dinghy on a long line to the mooring! (yes, I then went over it & wrapped it round my keel - at least it wasn't the outboard)

2. Carry lots of spare rope! Managed to get my boat back on the second mooring line but the one my dinghy was attached to was under my boat so I needed to tie a second line between the dinghy & the boat so that when I did get it free the dinghy didn't float away)

3. Cutting a line you can't see, under your boat, in the water with a dull knife is HARD work!

4. Practice both tying and untying knots when you can't see them :-)

Good Job! I have found that a knife with a sheepsfoot blade that can be opened with ONE hand is invaluable. I think that the company that makes mine still sells them through one of the mall stores. It is a SOG. That is the companies name. Sorry, I cannot remember the store - it is a small variety store that also sells luggage and tempur-pedic matteresses.

My two favorite tools... Just replaced them after loosing my first ones overboard awhile ago. I use the marlinspike often myself.

the CRKT Bearclaw runs about $25 but the Wichard fid/key about $40. Worth every penny.

I lost my SOG knife with locking marlinspike. Then my sister called me to tell me that she found it in her truck. Hooray!

here ya go guys. the Gerber EAB that stands for exchage a blade. Contractor razor knife blades are used in it, different type of blades are available such as a hook type tough I only use heavy duty regular. I locks back, very thin, doubles as a money clip. Fits unociabley in your pocket and it is rust proof stainless, all for less than 15 bucks.

In my other pocket...when a boatswain mate my spike was always separate. I could carry on about the size and so forth of my spike but in the name of good taste...besides bragging is unbecoming.

This little blade is within reach 24-7. It is only 2 13/16" by 1 1/4" by 1/4". This is so compact that it will fit in a Levi watch pocket. I use it also as my money clip. BTW, ladies, I would just bet the more ingenious of you could find a place to clip it to on your gender specific apparel.

Truth is I buy these 6 at a time and hand them out to special people. One way to insure someone remembers you.
