Big Dog Snaps

I use brass dog and horse leash shackles for a number of applications, including lifelines.

I used to leash dogs in training to a railroad cross tie for strength training. It was amazing to see what a small, strong dog could drag once he found out it would move.

Never had a good one break although I have had horses break webbing straps and halters.

I save carabiners for climbing.

What constitutes a "good" one? At least when you buy name brand marine fittings you are assured of strength testing and quality control, plus the knowledge that the fitting was designed for the application for which it is marketed. I like bargains but I'll not put a bargain price on my life or the lives of others.

Ok, so 1/4 inch 1/19 wire has a breaking strength of more than 8,000lbs, dyneema even more. Unless the horse was dangling from the clip, he/she could put little more than its weight on it. Horse pulling events are done with yolks and don't usually exceed a couple of thousand pounds per animal, that is dragging the weight, not lifting it. Plus how can you tension a life line with a dog clip? Steel is much stronger than brass, no matter how you cut it.

Whatever you want to do in the interest of saving money is fine by me, but you won't find me offshore on your boat with horse pull tested clips.

When I am sitting in a cockpit alone at night, I like the simplicity of the transfer on my harness when I step (scoot) through the dodger to my mast. I work off short jack lines that won't reach the toe rail or outside the cockpit.

I also dislike having big chunks of steel swinging downstairs with the boys.

I expect 8k of force would wreak havoc with my torso.

Really no information in the post. No data. I've dragged cross ties while doing construction. Not near 5000 pounds.

I doubt many of these test to 500 pounds, let alone 5000 pounds.

I'm also trying to figure out why 5000# strength matters in climbing, but not on a lifeline. Sure, you can sail without lifelines (my last boat had none) and you can climb without a rope (done that too). In both cases, you know what you are doing, but weak gear that should be strong is never OK.

The reference had more to do with the strength of a small dog than the snap.

The lifelines I refer to are the short tethers I make from web strap to keep me from traveling to far.

Wow!?! So you are using that as your tether clip, not a life line at all. You might as well skip the harness and tether altogether. It would be simpler that way. If you get thrown over board, that thing will either just bend right open, or twist off. The good news is that your torso will be fine, but you will be nowhere near your boat.

I would think it would be hard to argue that a tether was not a life line for most folks.

Bend one without using a come-a-long and post the pics.


BTW WM sells these for about $25, I think. Sail bags to lifeline use for one.

If it's really $25 at WM it's a rip-off. They should sell for about $5 give or take. Search the web for "#3 brass snap hook".

I use them to attach my dinghy to the dock but I'd never bet my life on one. I want a beefier connection for my tether.

I have had them pull open from storm surge yanking the dinghy painter at the dock... deformed enough so that the spring gate could open outward and no longer contacted the hook. Just so you can guesstimate the force involved, my dinghy weighs about 225# plus a 120# engine, so about 350# altogether. You might think it was still hooked, but no -- without the gate the dinghy came free. Luckily there were other attachments so I still own it.

That is even scarier. Folk have broken 5000# tethers when clipped direct to hard points (no shock absorption). I'm sorry, but this is a very bad idea that should not be replicated. Handy, but not safe.
