Re: zeehag on the Move

Monkey,

What's the name of that large lagoon/bay they are passing now? And would it be a good or possible place to anchor?

Don't know the name of the bay but there are really no safe anchorages that I recall until you get to Bahia Santa Maria just above the entrance to Mag Bay. The whole coast south of Bahia Tortuga is littered with wrecks but she will have a sleigh ride down to Mag Bay... cheers, Capt Phil

Remember that this is a leeshore! Due to local terrian, sometimes the six fathom line is less than 50 feet from shore, making anchoring impossible.

Yes, a lee shore. But I was thinking more of the lagoon. I just looked on google maps and it's called San Ignacio. On the satellite image, it looks like there's a deep water channel that could get you pretty far into the sheltered lagoon. Have you ever been there?

No, but the boat I was buddy-boating with did, He had to dink his dog ashore at his wifes suggestion.

JohnA,

So was it OK to enter and anchor?

Re: zeehag on the Move

flysci - u will have to check real charts. I was luuuking at cruising guide and maps for alernative places, but none became apparent. Next stop Bahia Santa Maria. YAAYAYA!

Looked for some ditch holes for zeezee earlier before she left - places where you could ground boat and walk ashore and then kedge out perhaps during emergencies such as spilling soup or leaky shaft thingies. Nothing came to mind but maybe this is goodie.

Personally, monkeywise....i would head WAY off shore going up or down hill bcuase of silly lees and wavey things.

He made it in and out. He and the dog were ashore for less than 30 minutes, leaving his wife on the boat. I never heard all the details but his boat was draging anchor when he returned to the boat.
The dog was much relieved.

Re: zeehag on the Move

How many more ways are there to tell people that going south down the coast has about three safe anchorages? I started reading reports of this passage around 1984 and have made the trip south, twice.

Two good stops folks that's it.

Google search Baha Bash. All about going North.

Re: zeehag on the Move

Margo, about 2000 or 2001 I passed the entrance heading north on a powerboat delivery and in really smooth conditions, scoped the entrance from about 5 miles out. Entrance to the lagoon was guarded by shifting sand bars not too different than the run up to Puerto San Carlos in Mag Bay except without the channel markers. No way I would approach this place without local knowledge and on a dead calm day. The channel markers to Puerto San Carlos, by the way, tend to have to be moved every year or so because of the shifting bars. Spooky shore to be close to... Capt Phil

Re: zeehag on the Move

I'm glad to see that she passed Abrejosos.
It means "Open your eyes".
We really wanted to rest there, but after entering we saw it could be our last anchorage ever.
It was blowing on a lee shore and the anchor didn't stick worth a darn.

We kept going.
