Yemeni Pleads Guilty in Hijacking of Seattle Couple (s/v Quest)
A Yemeni man pleaded guilty to piracy on Thursday for his role in the hijacking of a yacht off the coast of Africa that left four Americans dead, including a Seattle couple. Mounir Ali is now the 11th man to plead guilty in the February hijacking of the yacht Quest, although prosecutors don't believe any of those men fired the fatal shots aboard the sailing vessel...
... Court documents have identified three Somalis at the triggermen aboard the boat. They each still face piracy, kidnapping and weapons charges, and prosecutors have said additional charges are likely in the future...
... Ali faces life in prison at sentencing in October, although that could later be reduced as part of a plea agreement that requires him to help prosecutors in this case and possibly others...

Re: Yemeni pleads guilty in hijacking of Seattle couple (s/v QUEST)
'Life' in a USA jail would be better than life in Somalia. They will be out in 10 or so years and, if they work and study hard while in jail, be open to a new life, proabably inside the USA as its against international law to deport someone to a war torn country... and Somalia will still be that in a decade...

Re: Yemeni pleads guilty in hijacking of Seattle couple (s/v QUEST)
I've often wondered if some of the pirates out there really don't care about pirating and are actually hoping to be apprehended by authorities in a rich country.
I was reading an article in the local news the other day about a man that "robbed" a bank for $1 so that he would go to jail for the free medical care. Perhaps some of the thieves have the same ideas.
Or maybe they're just pirates that figure that at best they steal a bunch of stuff and get rich and at worst they get to spend the rest of their lives in an air conditioned cell with access to food, television, media, education, religion, and culture outside of the little hell hole country they came from.

.... and in the country they claim to hate so much.
Without being at all political, but it does seem strange that those who so violently oppose the USA would be the fist to rush the Embassy if Green Cards were being handed out.
As you Americans say: Go figure!

Sometimes the easiest things to tear down are the things you hate because they're beyond your perceived reach.

Maybe that'd be a good thing. Maybe the future of piracy out there will be boarding an American boat and then surrendering to the captain.

They have to be careful which country gets them though. Piracy is still a capital offence in some countries (US for one). And I don't think there would be much "outrage" if it were enforced.

Irrespective of standards. I doubt very few choose incarceration rather then liberty.

Re: Yemeni pleads guilty in hijacking of Seattle couple (s/v QUEST)
My understanding by reading the sources is a number of these so called pirates have been pushed into their role because of strong armed so called "leaders" and also because of cultural and tribal will. In other words, a number of them are relieved when they are captured - to get out of their positions.

They should have been left to the sharks where found.
Simple, cheap and an effective deterrent.

MarkJ, this is a federal crime and in the federal prison system you only get 15% of your time off for good behavior. It's way more lenient in state systems. I'm not sure how this applies to a life sentence but i suspect it will be longer than 10 years. BOB

They will get out in a few years and end up with a green card and a Harvard Law Degree.
