I don't believe in either the posative or the negative thread I have seen much that explains her experience or ability. Not much or very hard to find sailing experience on her site. I would have thought that this would be up front and center to belay the comments of the concerned.

Because of age/legal restrictions I’ve not been able to sail a passage properly solo but I have completed a mock solo passage across the Tasman, January 2009 and have been collecting offshore miles for almost two years.

I think it was a horrible statement to make. Um, sorry, the death of a child is the worst thing to happen to a parent.
If she dies, he will be forever haunted by that inane comment.
That statement is now hanging in the air above her...poor kid is now under tremendous pressure to risk her very life in order to....what exactly? There is no record to break, no one will recognize her effort. So, what is it, to please mum and dad? Her own father says its okay if she dies?

On the father's comment
I think it's good that he celebrates her sense of freedom over his want to protect her. I'd rather have a child accomplish something he/she desires over mollycoddling them indefinitely at home

Well, I suppose there are things worth dying for (though I can't think of any off hand). A dubious record likely to be broken as soon as it's set isn't one of them, however.

You know, I'll bet that while breaking the record is nice that isn't the primary objective of the family. However setting the record opened up the chance to get sponsorships, which to me seems like a much better way to finance a circumnavigation. It's probably a combination of things, but for me personally, if I were young and capable and I wouldn't have to pay my way completely because I was making a name for myself and any product that sponsored me, I'd leap at the chance.

I would love to be 16 again and have this opportunity. Even though there is no record to break anymore we will all know she has achieved it.

What if the only thing she acheived was enticing somoen even younger to go and put themselves in peril? Would it then be worth it? Remember each sucessive person will be younger and younger...

It's great to see a young person who has the resolve to set her mind to doing something and then setting about getting it done. If we had more young men and women like this we'd have a lot less problems in this world. When you think about the knowledge that this young lady has crammed into so few years it's amazing.
As an Australian by conception and a Californian by birth I wish her the best of luck in this great adventure.

Hey, I clicked over to Succeed to see how she is doing...uh.. am I back to Fail, did I click de wrong button?
Anyone know how she is doing?
It would be great if there was a daily posting, at a set time, to give her basic wellfare (alive, made 90 mile last 24 hours etc). Can anyone do that? Please?
