I have only half followed the Jessica story, and have no idea (or opinion) on whether she is capable of succeeding, or of simply avoiding killing herself. Not a good start, but sometimes "sh#t happens".

But IME at 16 some folks will be as capable as anyone of doing "adult" stuff. most are not - but IMO that''s largely an upbringing issue, especially in the West with extended childhoods (not to say always a bad thing).

The Goat however wishes her Bon Voyage

Perhaps we just like discussing matters of mutual interest, applicable to our Forum. Perhaps the divergent opinions, and resulting controversy add to our interest & enjoyment.
Or, perhaps not.
Perhaps a reasonable point but mostly we don't use 30 something pages to go over and over a subject without (IMO) much being added to the conversation / debate. I as guilty as any here in this regard.

As to the fiddles bit, I think you might be a little ingenious comparing:
1. A direct question from a CF member to CF members which they are free to answer or not according to their whim.

to

2. A running division as to whether Jessica is "right" or "wrong" in what she is doing. AFAIK, she is not a member of CF.

Please note I do like to discuss matters of mutual interest and read divergent opinions however it seems to me after 30 pages of mainly a couple of the same opinions repeated, we might (in the words of others) build a bridge and get over it.

Oh my Goat! The threads have mixed!

Can we ask a moderator to split them back into two:

- the goat on the treading water solo around attempt at the boat,
- the girl on the teenage thread to goat solo and failing to do so.

PLS

;-)))

Does anyone know how many years of education are compulsory (& how many available) in Australia, and the minimum school leaving age?
How many does Jessica have?

Jessica Watson: An open letter from solo sailor Mark Carlile

MARK Carlile sailed solo from England to Brisbane over 226 days from late in 2006. He has tried to contact Jessica Watson since March to pass on his tips but his approaches have been knocked back. This is his advice to the 16-year-old sailor:

JESSICA, you're about to start on a journey that will change your life forever.

A non-stop, solo trip around the world is a huge task for anyone.

I know there are plenty of people saying "don't do it". I don't want to say that to you ...

Gord: I have seen 13 y.o. working in supermarkets in NZ. I do not think there will be much difference between them and Ausies - probably not many compulsory years.

Gord,
School goes to year 12, kids around 18 years old. They can leave after year 10, age 16, if they have a job or other training. At 14 years of age, they can leave home etc and there is nothing the parents can do about it. The parents however are still held accountable, particularly if the child does not go to school. We have our Dept Family Services (brown shirts) to thank for that one. Just had dealings with those...

Yes, kids can leave at year 10 but then what are their job prospects long term?

In Australia, like the USA not only are kids competing against their peers but increasingly competing against highly motivated, highly educated kids from Asia, India and the rest of the world.

A Supermarket job, or flipping burgers may be OK for a teenager, but when you are 40 years old it just doesn't cut it. Female or male. Perhaps the pressure is more on females these days: at 40 years old they have to bring up the kids and bring in the family weekly budget as dads pay goes to the house bank loan.

Tanking a 'Gap' year off between school and university is a recognised way to have a bit of fun/adventure before settling down to study, as well as gain that important year of maturity.

I think you are on to something Bill.

To attract the appropriate Sponsors, why don’t you commission a heavy weather sailing clip using this product, to convince backers you haven’t gone off the deep end...
