Something a bit fishy about either the boat or the reporting. Noosa is not a Port of Entry.

And in our experience, it takes rather more than a month to sail from Mexico. Wonder what gives here?

Inaccurate reporting in an Australian newspaper?! Surely not!

I'd be tipping poor fact finding over dodgy sail antics first.

Noosa not only is not an entry port, but no one in his right mind would attempt that bar with that deep a keel anyway!

There are some cats up there, but that's all. No deep keel boats.

Anyhow, somethings are very wrong about this story. Sad pic of the boat, in any event.

I like my old 70s era boat. Enough fiberglass in the hull to pretty much prevent that little problem.

Doh!

Of course, "mexicans" is what Queenslanders call visitors from the Southern states! Yep - thinking about it, a gullible reporter is the most likely answer.

In the cruising fraternity in Queensland Noosa is notorious for being pretty well all shoals and it's vigorous pursuit of yachties for illegal discharges. They may have backed off since they discovered that the reason they had to regularly close the beaches for health reasons was not the yachties all crapping in their river but one of the town drains into which sewage was being introduced by septic systems after heavy rains.

No person in their right minds would go into the place in a deep keeled vessel without a lot of local knowledge.

Lucas, in his Cruising the Coral Coast guide says "The river entrance is barred and carries no navigation aids. In calm weather at high tide a vessel may enter as long as her draft does not exceed tide height. Immediately inside the entrance, however, is a confusion of shifting sand banks demanding local knowledge to navigate. The stranger is warned away."

Its very sad to see a boat get damaged, I feel for the poor owners, such a dreadfull event. I took my cat accross the bar 2 months ago and tried to get local knowledge but could not. Coast guard would not give any information about current path or depths of the bar. They do however offer a service where they escort you through the bar, for a donation. I got an escort through, we made it through ok but just kissed the bottom on the sand bar inside the main bar. We only draw 0.7m. The coast guard escort service is fantastic.

This is interesting, but does not address the question of why an allegedly experienced sailor would try to enter the Noosa with a deep draft boat... under any conditions!

FWIW, our boat was built on that river, but was trucked to Mooloolaba for launching... and she was a centerboarder at the time with fairly shallow draft.
