This is the part that (fill in the blank!):
"He had relayed messages by a ham radio network that the sail boat went completely upside down and everything in the hold was all over the place - but he managed to get himself a cup of tea."
Hello? You're going around the world the wrong way and you've never heard of securely stowing stuff and dogging down the cabin soles and lockers?
We did that just sailing from Seattle to Mexico!
I am speechless. What's next? Will he sue for not getting rescued fast enough?

I am kind of shaking my head at picking a twelve meter to do this. He must have made some serious modifications to even contemplate doing this as the rigs are not stout enough for world cruising. Also there is virtually no shelter from the elements. Low freeboard...etc etc
I love the line about getting a cup of tea after getting knocked on his ear. How civilized. Images of a Victorian tea party with extended pinkies went through my head.

David - if 40 ft isn't sufficient to circumnavigate, then what is? I submit the rig was plenty stout, if he managed to roll it and not lose the mast. I don't understand why he didn't sail into Port Stanley???
Pelagic - ha ha, but tipping is standard in Canada, unless the service sucks - are you speaking from personal experience?

12 meter (39 feet) boat, not a 12 meter rule boat. Remember Canada and the rest of the world except Sierra leone and the US, use System International, aka metric system.

beautifull boat
but not the one to go around the world the "wrong way "...
why some people want to make it silly difficult for themself, especialy with a boat like that, to be "the first ' of 'this or that'..
i really don't get it..
they could have enjoye beautifull cruise with his family in some enchanting islands, instead he want a "ego trip"..
sorry , but little compassion .

Nah, just a joke I heard from a waiter in Hawaii.
I also think this guy was greatly influenced by Miles Smeeton with the cuppa tea thing

That explains it - customer service in Hawaii does suck; real manana attitude. Funny, 'cause customer service in the US is generally pretty good.

Hi Jack,
I know...I work with scientists. In fact everything onboard is set up in metric. The electronic chart datum is in meters, the anchor rode is marked in meters, the sounder is in meters, the boat speed is in meters per second and the meter wheel for the cable winch is in...you guessed it...meters. The pic of the boat never came up on my browser so I couldn't see what it was other than reading "12 meter"...apparently it is "beautiful".

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Offset companion ways are not safe, that is not a boat I would have chosen for that trip. Glad he's safe.

I think he just went with the boat he had. Not everyone is able to pick the boat they'd like. I agree with the wrong time of year comment though.
