The sailor, Mitsuhiro Iwamoto was Blind and has participated in many visually impaired races in the past.

The passenger was a well known Japanese reporter that was documenting his journey.

Vessel is BCC.

How blind... there are many levels that qualify...
However... I do offer my respect and compliments to Mr Mitsuhiro Iwamoto for his achievements..

PS: obviously no forward looking sonar set to 1000 metres

re: Whale Collision near Japan - Merged

I think this is a good example of why a lookout every 30 minutes in open seas may not be enough. If it was a BCC, it was probably was not going fast enough to cause injury to the whale was it? (really, how fast do they go upwind in swells??) I almost wonder what was up with the whale- every whale I have been around easily avoided my Valiant and swam circles around it if they were curious. Were they sleeping?

re: Whale Collision near Japan - Merged

I have a idea about whales being hit by some sailing boats, And not by other sailing boats ! I think it has to do with noise the hull make in the water! I know that some boats make more noise thru the water then others do ! I know our Colvin was noisey at even mild speeds ! And it seems that whales always went around us and very very seldom even under us ! But other boats Ive sailed were less noisey in the water and the whales seem to come a lot closer!! I could be wrong, but thats what Ive figured out over the years! Our new to us boat is a lot less noisey then our old Colvin, I hope that that they don't try to hitch a ride !! Just my 2 cents

This is probably the Japanese justification for the "research" that results in major whale culls each year. The season is just about to start again. May be the whales will fight back??
