Really?....We were on my boat going down the Ca. coast. Maybe not 100% but the person on watch should scan on occasion. I made the comment in jest because the camera caught it.

Honestly I don't see it as a whale. Big brown object off to the starboard there. Maybe whales look different in that part of the world. The ones I've seen are black or grey.

Not sure what you're seeing but in the video at 15 secs, you can see one fin directly ahead of the boat. At 22, you see two fins and at 27 you see one again. Then the boat hits. They are clearly whales, looks like a cow and calf, probably sleeping.

A fin whale (largest of the species except the similar blue whale) was found in puget sound a couple weeks ago ...dead. Analysis was he was hit by a freighter. We get a few with this death every year. I imagine they dont understand the speed of a freighter. Also, my experience is that whales (at times when they are moving from point A to point B ....not feeding , playing mating etc) seem to go on "autopilot mode" and just cruise along. That could be their downfall with the freighter traffic these days. I once had a Killer Whale almost hit me head on... he never did acknowledge that my boat existed and missed me by about 3-4 feet. I could have almost touched his dorsal fin. I saw him coming a mile ahead and thought "well, he will disappear as soon as he sees me", I was reading a book with AP on. Next thing I know WOW there he is!
