Anyone out there own a Westsail or would like to learn more about them? There will be a Westsail gathering in Belfast, Maine (Penobscot Bay) on July 1st and July 2nd, 2007.

Well it's finally Memorial Day. My boat gets launched on Tuesday after a full winter of projects. This will be the last winter in Maine for the Westsail as we are heading south in September.

Just a reminder that the Westsail Rendezvous is only 5 weeks away. Those of you who own one or like Westsails are welcome to attend.

The event is July 1 & 2, 2007 in Belfast, Maine. Penobscot Bay is a great place to cruise. Many islands, villages and hundreds of anchorages.

do any owners of older 40ft westsails have good or bad opinions on them ? I am looking at one and could use some feedback

I know a lot about the 32 Westsail but don't know much about the 42 & 43. One was the aft cockpit and the other a center cockpit.

You could go on WOA Web Site to ask those owners about their vessels. What I do know is that they are build as robust as the 32. Many have circumnavigated.

A Westsail would be my second choice after a CSY.

For some reason I like heavy and bulletproof boats built with quality materials.

Speed ain't no factor..If in a hurry I jump on an airplane, or catch a ride with a 'fraid of healing caffeine addicted catamaranian with ants in his pants.

Gentlemen sail @ 5 knots, come hell or high water...

One major advantage of Westsails is that you can still get OEM parts for them. CSY are nice boats and each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Perhaps ya misunderstood me:

I think they are very similar as in heavy and well built, but slow in light winds.

If anything a Westsail 32 is more of a "blue-water" boat due to the small cockpit.

The CSY 33 may be more of a Bahama Mama: Fat, slow and sturdy and perfectly suited for the local environment. (like the owners:-)

On quality, it depends. 60 of the 120 or so that were made were kit boats sold at various stages of completion, to be finished by owners. As with the 32's some buildouts were better than others.

Don't let people confuse you with the 32s. Mention the word 'Westsail' and they think of the 32, which is usually followed by the words "slow" and "wet". The 42/43 is a very different boat, very different hull shape (cutaway forefoot, less wetted surface compared to the 32's, relative to length of course). They arent a "slow" boat (a relative term of course).
