Warning: Carrabelle to Appalachicola, FL

For cruisers between Carabelle and Apalacicola be warned. There is a dredge pipeline going directly across the channel as you approach the shallow bay to Apalacicola in St. George's Sound.

The dredge will not answer on 13 or 16. A pilot boat may or may not be present. If it does, you cannot count on the pilot boat to contact you on the VHF or help you negotiate around the channel.

In our case, a pilot boat showed up after half an hour of calling on 13 and 16. The pilot boat then took off at high speed back to Apalacicola without contacting us on the radio. If you follow the pilot boat's path, you will go aground.
