Vessel hauling logs to China sinking

"APRA HARBOR, Guam — The U.S. Coast Guard says 24 crewmembers have been rescued from a sinking cargo ship that lost power in the western Pacific Ocean.
The Guard says it received word Sunday morning that a vessel hauling logs to China was in trouble about 450 miles west of Guam.

By Sunday afternoon, the Chinese crew of the Panama-flagged Rich Forest had abandoned the 500-foot ship and boarded life rafts.
About three hours later, a bulk cargo vessel called the CS Sunshine reached the crew and safely rescued all of them.
The abandoned ship is now adrift. The Coast Guard is warning nearby ships of the navigation hazard."


Great, now you will need to look out for logs floating around in the western Pacific. Tuff to see at night.

Could be the logs are stowed below and/or chained to the deck. In which case their buoyancy may be keeping the leaky steel hull from sinking.

I'm sure it's quite a sight. Not one I'd like to encounter except at high noon on a calm sea. . . .

When hauling logs they're down below and on deck as they're not very heavy and the volume is such that you have to have deck cargo to make the trip worthwhile. The deck cargo is usually lashed pretty good. Every couple of layers of logs was usually lashed with old wire rope and the weight of the next layer tightens it up. The problem with logs as deck cargo is that the vessel is then a bit tender. If the logs soak up during the voyage the vessel become even more tender. When we used to do it in the olden days we'd do a hoist with all the derricks on one side to see how tender the boat was.

Where i live they put logs in 40ft shipping containers to send overseas.......look out Robert Redford!!
