Re: Vessel boarded and robbed between Trinidad and Grenada

A flare gun at close range can start a fire in a skiff attempting a boarding move. But how about a heavier load in a long barrel 12ga. shotgun? Lob a flare or two onto the deck of the mother ship and make the third round a slug load not birdshot.

Anyone tried the flare load / fire starter with a 12 ga.? Looking for ideas.

Re: Vessel boarded and robbed between Trinidad and Grenada

Rich kids complain about being ripped off by poor people. What news is that? Doubt if most cruisers report any crimes. Will get you locked up or worse. Just accept that your a target in most of the ports around the world. We have met lots of cruisers who got boarded, robbed, raped, and crippled. Reported the crime only to be stuck in port for weeks to months on end while the "investigations" went nowhere. Two actually got murdered afterwards. So after about 40 years, can only offer this advice: make it look like lots of folks aboard. We had three junky tenders we always left chained to our boat while at anchor. Cockpit light always on. Don't carry much cash and leave your Rolex on board when on land.

Pfffft. This thread is showing me some sides of people I'd rather not see.

I am amazed at the willingness of some people to either kill or harm people, support sharia law as a way of "teaching good behavior" or wish some horrible, fatal diseases to strike them for a dumb forum post.

Learned a lot, tho:

If you want to assess the risks of cruising Trinidad, you must:
- read all reports (agreed)
- know all the stories (doubtful)
- be well aware of WW2 and avoid repeating history (huh?)
- consider the current terrorist threat level in the Netherlands (huh? again)

Feeling well informed now, I'll be leaving this thread since it seems to have hit rock bottom ... or not yet, I fear, but sure to get there soon.

Merry Christmas - I hope you'll all enjoy loving and safe holidays.

"Mother ship"? You mean, like, Indian Ocean/Somali pirates? Oh well… As Bulawayo is correct to say, mostly they are history, but if you did encounter pirates who were sophisticated enough to have "skiffs" and "mother ships" (say around the Bight of Benin or off Nigeria) your little firecracker would be being attempted to be lobbed onto the deck of a boat equipped with belt fed LMGs, Rocket Propelled Grenades, and plenty of automatic small arms. How'd you like those odds?

As to ideas… see my list above.

You do know that will get you certainly killed, if not by the bad guys, then by the police. AK-47s are ubiquitous, corrupt officials everywhere(including US), and once you try to take revenge your really sealing your death warrant.

Ray. You are a misguided ........ These cockroaches need to be exterminated. Your friendly Arabs are cutting the throats of non believers, raping and murdering, enslaving women and children. And you probably missed hearing about the terror attacks against civilians in Paris and Colorado. The USA has a lot to be proud of. Liberating most of Europe from Hitler. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Vessel boarded and robbed between Trinidad and Grenada

As this board descends into incivility , i will add one last thing. The vast majority of folks around the world are decent lots who will help rather than hurt others. We sailed for 40 years and never had a problem, and most of our fellow cruisers we met did not have problems either . There are usually reasons why some attract bad times. Simple precautions will keep you out of troubles. Therre really are no reasons to go looking for trouble.
