The vikings did not cross the ocean in open boats in grey seas, they were probably green. Warm. A change that spelled trouble for the Mayans. And when the "sun didn't set on the British Empire" the seas and the climate were very cold (for three hundred years, at least one of them without a summer).

Climatic variation is a normal parameter of life on this planet. We refuse to live in harmony with variation and refuse to think or see "beyond the end of our nose" and seek a convenient scapegoat, to assuage our troubled souls, generally unconcerned with truth and focusing on minute facts.

Change will be good for the Human Race. Stress, death and die-off will make the remaining survivors that much stronger. And that's the way it has always been, biologically.

Way too political a thread for my normal taste but this guy is great:

Right now I'm reading Theroux's Dark Star Safari, where he returns to Africa 30 years after teaching in Uganda. It makes me suspect that if a crash does happen the poorest of the poor might not have their subsistance living changed too much, those addicated to their processed lives might have the harder time of it.

Good thing these boats of ours force some basic mechanics on us eh?

Also, the answer to population control is in Japan. They are facing a crisis because their current workforce is aging out and there are not enough people in the next generation to replace them. They failed at breeding...which is fairly impressive for humans because we are so good at it. Perhaps instead of education/birth control we need sailor moon cartoons and better cell phones.

@Boatman...After various trips though the midwest I too have dreamed of the wondrous world where they are forcefully serialized at birth and GRANTED the right to have offspring. Obviously this is an unrealistic solution, and just a neat thing to think about. Honestly, aside from the Orwell1984/NaziEugenics undertones of such an idea, what scares me the most would be the spread of STDs in such a society. Instead of putting on a condom to bed the next girl, you'd prep with the pre-coital broad spectrum antibiotic.

You simply dont get it. In 99% of human history there was less than a billion people on the planet. Thats over 11500 years (I dont care if you believe we've only been here for 5000) Now we are spreading like an out of control bacterial infection (7 billion and counting). Try observing nature for just a second or two if you can. What happens when a bacteria reaches the limits of its food sources? Sure it reaches equilibrium...but nature is not kind, forgiving or cruel...it simply is. Those bacteria spend their miserable lives fighting for food and space 'til they die. Is this what you want for your children? Answer soon, the next billion is only 10 years away...and thats a way that has NEVER been before, biologically.

I.D., this is worth posting directly:

Christian... sadly.. even after 46 lifetimes on earth, 29 as a Human...
I have not yet managed to achive the intelligence, wisdom and harmony with Nature that would allow me to ascend to the level of the Dolphin or Whale...

Its the single largest test in the Wheel of Life... the 7th stage..

OMMMmmmmmm

"The planet has survived everything, in its time. It will certainly survive us."
Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park)

"Human beings are so destructive. I sometimes think we're a kind of plague, that will scrub the earth clean. We destroy things so well that I sometimes think, maybe that's our function. Maybe every few eons, some animal comes along that kills off the rest of the world, clears the decks, and lets evolution proceed to its next phase."
Michael Crichton (The Lost World)

women with kids who can't support them must get a norplant in order to get public monies.when/if they no longer require these $ then they can have this birth control devise removed. this will do much to help pop. growth inthe first world.

The population of CO² deniers seems to have evaporated..

What's the world coming to, they'll start believing in evolution next!

Flatulance contradicts a denial of CO2....

I'm always somewhat amused when someone typing on their disposable petrochemical device surrounded by several tons of processed products ripped from the earth tries to convince me to take the "high road" on any environmental issue.

I just try to keep an open mind, and try to pay attention to the big picture. It's important to know the difference between green and green washing. It's all too easy to be smug and say sailboats are greener than powerboats for instance, but in the big picture sailboat living is still a pretty wasteful lifestyle compared to the average person living in the world.

I'm not condemning anyone, just pointing out the need to be self aware. I can't say that I do my best, it's closer to balancing doing my best for the environment with living a comfortable lifestyle for myself and my family.
