Re: US sailboat 'Shearwater' rescued

Here's the Google Translation:

The Maritime Rescue boat "Salvamar Alnair" sailboat rescued Saturday when U.S. "Shearwater" with a crew on board, when he was in trouble two miles north of Fuerteventura, Efe reported Maspalomas Space Station.

After detection of the alarm of a beacon for the Space Station to the National Institute of Aerospace owns south of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas station sent a warning message to the Cospas-Sarsat Center, United States, and rescue services Spanish (Canary RCC and National Center for Maritime Rescue Coordination).

About midnight, Maspalomas Space Station was informed that the vessel "Shearwater" was towed by Salvage port of Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and the American crew was safe.

So is all of this talk of 'space station' just Google's way of saying EPIRB and Satellite... Or did the boat actually call the I.S.S. with a ham radio? cuz that would be pretty cool

The Babelfish makes the same funny translation. Maybe "space" is coming from a word that should translate here as "area" or "district" ?

An area and a "space" being sometimes synonymous in USEnglish...and sea rescue stations usually being designated by areas?

Re: US sailboat 'Shearwater' rescued

It was not a google issue: the space institute is translated more or less correctly. There is a spacial (?) institute (ion) in Maspalomas - you now guys with huge radio telescopes aimed at stars, etc..

The word radiobalisa is there too and got translated to beacon I believe correctly too.

We had some iffy wx at that time the guy either freaked out or being N of Fuerte he believed the boat would have gotten stranded (possibly if there was any damage).

Life saving is free but towing bill will be a bitter thing.
