Ugly Americans Cruising

I have been away from the Internet for quite a while, so if this has been reported, please forgive me.

I couldn't believe when another cruiser told me a couple on another boat had killed and eaten protected iguanas in the Bahamas and posted it on their Facebook page. In the photos, they had lined up in front of them immature conch, also against the law to take.

Check the March 19 edition of the Nassau Tribune for a story about them and another boat who killed a protected duck on a private island.

http://www.tribune242.com/

Most cruisers are pretty environmentally conscious and recognize we are guests in other countries. I am appalled that I might be lumped in with these idiots.

The couple that took and at the iguanas was convicted and pleaded ignorance but in later conversations showed absolutely no remorse. I agree with the person quoted in the article. Their boats should be confiscated. They give us all a bad name.

IDIOTS!!!

I did a search and didn't see the earlier thread. Can you give me a link to it?

The thread was closed a while back once it got out of hand. News of the trial would be welcomed by many. The fact that George is outraged shows the feelings of most of this community. After all this time has passed I don't feel any less outraged.

Sure they're idiots but that punishment is a bit extreeme.

Also its not just Americans...

One Australian FAMILY is in jail in Kuwait because at the Kuwaiti airport one son started yelling to guards: "You are corrupt, your whole country is corupt"
They have been charged with Insulting the Sultan or something that carrys some huge sentince.

Also an Aussie has just been released after 6 months in a Thai jail for insulting the King for something he wrote in a book that sold 7 (seven) copies. Must have been a great book! LOL But a month per copy is a bit much.

The whole point of cruising is for us to see other countires and understand not only their unique flora and fauna but their people and customs too.

Taking their whole boat may not allow these idiots to go further and learn. Just pull their finger nails out as a warning....

Thank you for that...I am a Canadian who later became a US citizen(Dual status). I never have liked the term "Ugly American" and feel it is too loosely used. There are, like you say no shortage of idiots in every country. Even the one I was born to. It's our responsibility while out voyaging or land cruising to respect culture, life and one another.

Kangaroos in many areas get out of hand in numbers and cause a lot of damage. I guess you are also one of the nature lovers that think salt water crocodiles should be allowed to wander anywhere as well. Recently had one roaming one of the Whitesunday holiday islands that had been tagged and was being loosely monitored to see where it would go, just luck no one was taken.

This really was a very POOR selection of a subject title, and is resented by many of us of all nationalities.

Reality:

Sorry if I offend. I am an American and resent it deeply when my fellow nationals reinforce negative stereo types.

Pray, tell my why you find it offensive? I would like to understand.

The “offense” I take as have several other posters (incase you missed it) is that your selection of the inflammatory subject name, attempts to lump peoples of one nationality into a single group. This is totally without regard to the fact the subject offender’s nationality had nothing to do with the crimes they perpetrated. Unacceptable behavior is unacceptable in almost any nationality, the few exceptions being generally associated with ethnic and religious differences none of which are in play in this circumstance.

The subject title you selected only further adds to impression that everyone from a single nationality has the ability to be involved in the crime and be Ugly. Your being a member of that group does not in itself give you the moral right to defame the group, only the legal right to show your colors. At the same time you appear to fain a desire to disprove the basis of the title. At that, you failed as you have simply added to it.
