Note that the no go zone rules are relaxed if a boat needs to take action to avoid weather. More than one boat has entered the no go zones to avoid storms in the Indian Ocean.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Well looks like someone is following this conversation. This just in from GGR Directors:
"Entrants are navigation using a sextant. They can receive any information over the HF SSB radio that is free to the public (except ROUTING) GGR does not co-ordinate or manage any HF Radio scheds. Entrants are free to join any existing maritime network or organize their own HAM radio net if they are a licensed HAM operator. Occasionally Entrants have been given other entrant positions from the GGR LIVE TRACKER as they are interested in where they are in the flee etc. That makes some followers believe they are not navigating with a sextant anymore (which is NOT the case) and it may be against the spirit of the GGR. HF radio is encouraged for use as it was in 1968 for safety and logistic reasons. None the less to save any confusion the following new rule to the GGR comes into force on Dec 1st. NOR 3.1.3.3 GPS Positions from GGR Tracker and AIS Marine Traffic.
GPS co-ordinates of GGR entrants from the GGR LIVE tracker or AIS Marine Traffic are forbidden to entrants. Penalty 48hrs 1st offence. Disqualification 2nd offence."

I think they actually navigate the traditional way, but of course, the prudent mariner would check his position via HF, as it is readily available online.

Well, I think its great if they are plotting their course by sextant but the spirit of the race is not determined by such details.
In my mind non-stop solo around the world in a small boat through all sorts of weather including demoralising calms and stuff that will happily dismast you is the big deal.
These guys are all amazing and I will be really interested in all their reports.

Rules aside, has anyone noticed the system chasing Mark as he begins his path towards the horn? his timing couldn't be more crummy... hoping for the best for the guy, but he's in for a mess over the next 48 hours.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I think the spirit of the race is was all about sextant navigation and limited weather information.... doing it the way it was done 50 years ago.... otherwise they are just another group of punters single handing small boats around the world...

I see that Jeanne Socrates is now saying..
'That's when they're given their weather forecasts for the coming days by Ian, VK3MO, in Melbourne, Australia, (prepared by Peter Mott, ZL1PWM, in New Zealand) or get 'Don updates' (on Wednesdays) giving them an overview of how the race is going and how the various boats are doing. As part of that, they're able to confirm their positions, which is useful! '.

To me that is the same as being told where you are....

He was almost at the Horn at 2000Z 30th ( Friday ) ( latest info on the live tracker ).. should be well past it by Sunday when the weather cranks up from the NW.... once past the Horn life isn't so bad... he won't have to contend with a heavy NW sea over a SW swell which is the killer thereabouts....

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

Looks like Mark Slats didn't get around the Horn before the NWly came away.... and is trying to keep under the lee of the land for a bit...

Positions all at about 2000Z/1st December...late Saturday afternoon Cabo de Hornos time...
