I am not quite sure where the 260m wavelengths come from. The forcast period was 11 seconds, 47 knots and 9.8 meter waves.

from that I would expect gusts to around 70 knots, and bigger waves to be around 15 meters with the odd very rare rogue wave to 20 meters. But typical wavelengths would be nearer 160-180 meters or so, moving at around 30 knots. You would need a very fast boat to surf ahead of these waves. But I might well have my numbers wrong, or the storm could have been worse than forecast. But these numbers seem to agree with Gregors figures of a solid force 9 with gusts much higher.

Jean Luc has not put a foot wrong since he threw that dummy just south of the Equator fooling Peche and Slats. The gods have blessed him with the weather out in front, (His own weather window).
Just got to keep it together now. (Easier out in front then chasing, less pressure) he must be feeling pretty good. Dining tabledehote and vin rouge in the soir
Wonder if he will take the La Maire Straits at the horn!!!!!!!!!!

What's up with Mark Slats' heading this am? (183 degrees) Equipment problem, another storm, or is he looking for a better breeze?

The French language report remarked that he was fighting light headwinds. That might explain something but it does look pretty odd.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

A special thanks to the French fisheries patrol vessel - Osiris for heading into the storm to rescue stranded sailors.

Given to understand she is a 50 m long vessel weighing 700 tons. How safe is she in those 10 m seas? Or such heavy vessels can take real nasty weather thrown at them.

A bit curious and bit awed by their feat.

'Windy' indicates favourable winds to the south and a dead spot to the east..

He's (Mark Slats) back ESE now but still going slow. 1.4 knots.

Meantime Jean Luc is rocking out at 6.6 knots

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

I wonder if Mark, Gregor and Abilish had some main up when they went over.
I rounded up in 30kts with fully reefed main and bent the boom just north of Kerguelen isles. After that I run with just headsails 25kts and over never dragged any warps and never had a problem. Woke one morning checked the GPS and we had been doing 18kts through the night, 15 ton of boat and slept through it. Thank goodness for my mate "The Monitor"

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

thinwater, didn't Evans Starzinger report on using two single point drogues in series on long warps? I seem to remember such, and that he was happy with the results. IIRC he used around 600 feet of warp.

You may well be right here, I really don't remember any more.

Re: The GGR race, discussion and news

OK, call me paranoid, but the first thing that struck me when I loaded the GGR web page today was that Tomy looked a darn side happier now he is OUT of the race.

No... I don't have the faintest idea why either.
