Re: The Drones are here and ignoring regs

Is this the evolution of yachting... or intelligent design?

What is with the ever growing nastiness of people towards others? I just don't get the attitude and anger, and more is expected from fellow boaters/cruisers.

Sure, but there's that old expression of:
"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."
Adapted to the Cruiser world, it would go something like:
"You can show someone how to raise the sails, but you can't get them to toss of the dock lines."

10 years ago the Ipad and touch screen smart phones was something right out of star trek. However, today you can't go to a restaurant without seeing the family of four staring at their devices as if the other people at the table didn't exist. We call that progress and it rolls on. You can't hold back the tide of technological advancement...well not without an EMP anyway.

It's intelligent designs fault.

No I've been here and other forums a while and read lots of threads and posts. People truly are more focused on fear than enjoyment in boats. They explain it away just like you have.

You can take almost any topic and view it from the fear factor:
Life Rafts-you are not going to sink, why do you need one.
Spare parts-your stuff will not break, quite being a fear merchant.
Best way to design systems so they don't fail
What's a realistic cruising budget so we don't run out of money.
Why people spend more time preparing to cruise than most people cruise
Fear of choosing the "wrong" boat or gear.
Fear of wiring in your Autopilot wrong or not taking the right care of your water maker. Fear is healthy and makes you ask questions, think and learn for those with a healthy respect and I would say "fear" of what the sea and elements can do to you if you are ill-prepared. Heroes are not fearless, they have just learned how to conquer their fear and not let it rule them.

Re: The Drones are here and ignoring regs

I've been retired and cruising and living aboard now on year 9...fear...ha ha ha...only for those that dream and don't do. It's the saddest thing to sell a piece of cruising gear to someone only to have it started up for the first time by the next owner. Something I've seen many times and that I fear for sure. Drones...not so much.

Re: The Drones are here and ignoring regs

Have not read all the replies as it started out a bit testy.....

But I do wonder if spending some of that money to provide cruising yachts with an "environmental monitoring package " and communication allowance to transmit.... would be more effective?

Then... they could receive a far larger sampling of the environment and motivate real people to become more aware by actually participating

Re: The Drones are here and ignoring regs

There is a program like that out there....I just can't remember that name. Cruising boat can set some data points to be sent out with HF radio coms. Sea State, Wind Speed, air temp, water temp, etc. I just was never that techy to figure it out and do it.

I love Google...it takes the place of my memory:
Voluntary Observing Ship Program

But what happens if Google intentionally starts hiding and manipulating information...na...forget I said that...that could never happen...right?

I'm sure fear can also be a motivator. However it can hamper ones abilities to move forward..."paralyzed by fear". But that's not what is going on here. Topics like this, a Zika thread and yes Rich your favorite Arctic topic, plus more seem to be started for the OP's personal entertainment and attention.
I really don't believe they actually have a fear of any of it since they do not have a boat to be sailing to a place with Zika, sailing the Arctic or sailing among the drones. They're generally are not topics that raise any kind of awareness and rarely any boat significance whatsoever.
