No, I have not tried to keep up with a sub.

Published reports of US Navy subs indicate possible 50+ knots underwater at flank speed. Pretty frickin fast for something that large. But going flank speed is acoustically noisy too.

I would not expect the relatively slow speed sailing naval drone to keep up with a submerged sub going full speed. But a NETWORK or fleet of the drones spaced out over a large area (South China Sea) could be used to detect and track the sub as the sub moves from one sector to another. Same as is done with RADAR intercepts on the surface.

That is only one way I could see them being used, but I suspect it is a likely way they are being promoted to the US Senate.

Did you ever sail?
Just a repeat:

Good for filling the oceans with more junk, target practice, defeating purpose, souveniring.

Re: The Drones are here and ignoring regs

I think we need to do some R&D on defensive / offensive anti drone tech. Such as a pulse modulated extended range and targeted electro magnetic pulse device. A portable boat device directing the energy pulse could be used to disable dead in the water small and large. I can feel another DARPA grant coming on.

Mind you I will need more grant money to build the anti modulated directed EMP gun device defense system. Propably have to look at the force field protection technology of starfleet.

What fun. Tech creating the problem then using tech to kill the problem but in so doing leaving the world's navy's open to electronic inmobilizing new tech. Imagine a battleship being made dead in the water by my directed EMP device.

Mind you a portable electronic disabling device could be a useful counter measure against approaching pirates. Also could be great at blowing up the WiFi of that noisy boat at anchor. Just saying.

Wouldn't the drone/bot have to defend itself in court?

Being an ex-Navy submariner I will say you shouldn't believe everything you read.

And broken ones at that. They never give you what you pay for and your just told to put more coins in the machine. Typical of Government. Just one big broken coin receiving machine.

They already have created a lawyer robot. Recalls all cases pertinent and presents to judge. Nothing better than established case law to win your day in court.

So if you found it mid Atlantic you just turn it over. Will it sink? That is the burning question.

One person's fear is another person's challenge.

Pathetic.

Must be why so many on sailing and cruiser forums are mainly focused on fear related items. Makes me wonder why they want to do it.

OR maybe it's an intelligent realization of what can go wrong and preparing for it. People don't plan to fail when the fail. They fail because they fail to plan.

Why have a life craft? Just fear mongering to even talk about the dangers at sea. Much better to close your eyes and hope for the best rather than thinking of dangers and planning accordingly.

Like not giving a heck about Zika while walking around the Dominican Republic with short sleeves and shorts at dusk. Many do because they don't believe all this fear mongering. As for me I'm on the be prepared side of the fence.

And there will be a reward for returning one.

Perhaps we should be thinking about how to capture them ?
