650-square-mile (1,680-square-kilometre) island that is about half the size of Rhode Island.
If the guy is talented enough, they'll never find him. Even a few square miles with a non-moving target is hard enough to find. Dense mangroves and buttonwood trees over 650 square miles? Have fun with that.

Everybody loves an underdog and a survivor. They'll get him, eventually.

The kid is a real piece of work, but something in me has to give him some begrudging credit for being so damned slippery.

"Colton Harris-Moore has been running from American law enforcement since escaping from a Washington state halfway house in 2008, gained fame and thousands of fans who admired his ability to evade arrest. He is suspected of stealing cars, boats and at least five planes."

Frankly I'm not a "fan" and have no respect for this smug punk thief. The fact that he stole and damaged boats has me thinking he should be made into Lobster bait. My only hope that he gets to do some jail time in the Bahamas before he is sent back to the some cushy U.S. jail. But, I suspect his parents may have more than enough money to make sure that never happens. Wonder if they paid for his flying lessons.

I guess he never had any official flying lessons.....just a smart kid.

He will be in Jail for a long time after this once extradited to the states. Most likely a federal penitentiary since aviation falls under federal jurisdiction and the fact that he fled the country can't help either.

He had a good run at it but alas, it all ends sometimes. I wonder if the police officers will get the FBI $10,000.00 reward for him?

Local victims cheer arrest of "Barefoot Bandit"

Residents of Orcas and Camino Islands were heartened Sunday when they learned of the arrest of "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Harris-Moore.
By Jennifer Sullivan
Seattle Times staff reporter

Related

When staff at the Island Market on Orcas Island gleefully announced over the loudspeaker Sunday morning that Colton Harris-Moore had finally been caught in the Bahamas a cheer erupted across the grocery store.
Scott Lancaster, who owns an Ace Hardware store nearby, said he was among those whooping it up. Lancaster's shop, as well as the grocery, were among a string of businesses allegedly targeted by Harris-Moore earlier this year.
Lancaster said his first thought when he learned Harris-Moore was arrested was: "It's about time."
"We're just glad it's over and now the guy can get what he deserves. Hopefully it's a long jail sentence," Lancaster said. "The guy has absolutely no regard for personal property."

More than 50 thousand "Fans"? WTF?

This guy is a scumbag. A sociopathic klepto. Why would anyone admire anything about this kid?

Not to play the 'pass the blame' game, but by the sounds of it he had a wrteched upbringing and extremely poor role models in his life. He's still young and obviously very intelligent and capable. I think in this instance rehabilitation should be the main goal, whereas in all liklihood he'll be swallowed up by the penal system and spat out a more hardened and dedicated crim. No one wins there (though he may be a candidate for an MBA).

Conditions exist here one will do anything to escape.
He has.
We've all read about battered wives, for instance, who stayed with the man that eventually killed her and we've asked ourselves " Why didn't she leave?"
This kid may have gone through things so bad that it didn't matter what he had to do to leave. We don't know.

I'm sorry. What?

1) People who are in unhealthy situations still have choices. Yes, Some choices can be really tough to make.

2) ...."it didn't matter"... It matters to me. Not only that my personal property is in danger, but that people can look to excuse the sickness, even cheer it.

Interestingly, car thieves are the only prisoners who almost cannot win parole. Their recidivism rate it over 90% or some such. Apparently, the knowledge that you can take almost any vehicle any time and be off becomes irresistible. This kid is a vehicle thief deluxe so he may not see the outside of prison for quite a spell.
