Follow the link--I'm pretty sure it is real. Tons of current in that river and if you lost power you would be in trouble quickly on any vessel. The latest news is that they have towed the vessel off the bridge.

Damn Bridges! Unfortunately they can't claim bad charts like the USS Guardian minesweeper that found the reef in Phillipines, and is now in a scrap heap.

I managed to ram the Newport bridge once in a 26-foot Seafarer. Was tacking under in a strong current and the sails were blanketed at just the wrong moment. I had a choice of either side-swiping it or hitting it dead on the bow. I chose the bow, and we must have bounced back a foot after a rather loud collision. No apparent damage to the boat as we hit right on the bow chain plate.

The tanker is called Harbour Feature, but now is known as Bridge Feature

It has to be the bridges fault. The architect should have anticipated that an out of control tanker might hit it and placed the bridge pier elsewhere.

Drifted for 5 minutes and no one had the presence of mind to toss out an anchor? they must have been mesmerized by the architectural beauty of the bridge. Clearly the architect's fault...

This kind of reasoning is exactly how insane court cases are won. A sharp attorney really could argue that it is the bridges fault and win.
