Nicola Shepherd with Damian Alleyne and 4 others
My Dad Arthur and my step Mother Sharon have been missing at sea since Saturday.
They were sailing from St Lucia to Barbados, an easy sail and one my Dad has possibly done hundreds of times.
Searches from Barbados, St Lucia and Martinique have been ongoing with no sightings so far. My siblings and I are now appealing for anyone in any surrounding islands with access to boats, light aircraft or helicopters to join in the search. Our hope is that the yacht may be drifting.
We thank you all for any assistance that you may be able to offer."

Re: svserenity missing...

AN AIR AND SEA SEARCH has been mounted for Barbadians Arthur Alleyne and Sharon Went-Alleyne aboard the yacht Serenity.

The couple, who live in St Lucia, left there Sunday for a routine sail to Barbados and have not been heard from since. Efforts by marine authorities in Martinique, St Lucia and Barbados to contact the couple have so far failed.

Arthur Alleyne is an experienced sailor and boat captain.

Re: svserenity missing...

Obviously our thought are with them. There seems to be some conflicting information - Zee's OP suggests that they have been missing since Satruday, whereas the Global News report suggests that they only left St. Lucia on Sunday. We are also unsure whether he intended to make the passage to the Bahamas non-stop (with winds out of the SE he would have them right on the nose), whether he usually kept radio contact, if there was a distress call and if so, what the nature of the distress call was and what location it was sent from. Here's to hoping that they had only minor difficulties and that the matter comes to a happy resolution shortly.

BREAKING NEWS: Ex-captain of Brig Unicorn and wife missing at sea – Marine Unit confirms report

Alleyne was the former captain of the Brigg Unicorn, which sunk in May 2014.
The Marine Unit of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force has confirmed that they have received reports that former captain of the Brigg Unicorn Sam Alleyne and his wife Sharon are missing at sea.
A senior official at the Unit said an investigation is underway but could not provide further information at this time.
According to reports, the couple sailed from St. Lucia on Saturday on the 47 ft. sailing sloop ‘Serenity’ bound for Barbados, a journey which should take 14 hours at most.
“As of now 1600 hrs. GMT on Tuesday they have not arrived and all contact has been lost,” a source told St. Lucia News Online.
The Brig Unicorn sunk off the coast of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in May 2014. No one was injured and the persons on board were reportedly rescued by the St. Vincent Coast Guard shortly after the incident.
The Brig Unicorn was used in the filming of all three Pirates of the Caribbean movies as well as in the series Roots.
For some time, the 148-feet long vessel had been docked on the Rodney Bay Marina and was used there as a mini bar and restaurant. The Unicorn was built in Finland in 1948. The softwood schooner “had made St. Lucia proud” according to the words of Captain Alleyne sometime after it was featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean film starring Johnny Depp.

Re: svserenity missing...

Exactly Mark and, as I mentioned earlier, since the winds were out of the SE (or virtually on the nose) for the passage, while the delay is troublesome, there is still good reason for optimism.

Re: svserenity missing...

What have cruisers adopted an communication protocols for family and friends?

My mom is a worrier so I tend to share as little as possible and let siblings and other cruisers in on my expected route and arrivals but, then again, I really only gunkhole up and down the coast so my sailing is a lot more predictable.

Thoughts from longer distance cruisers on setting expectation?

Found: Alleynes safe in St Lucia

Found: Alleynes safe in St Lucia FOUND: Arthur and Sharon Alleyne.
WED, OCTOBER 29, 2014 - 1:06 PM

THE BARBADIANS who were missing at sea have been found.

An emotional Arianne Moore called the NATION minutes ago to report she had just spoken to her father Arthur Alleyne, who told her that he and his wife Sharon Went-Alleyne were “on land” in Soufriere, St Lucia.

“I don’t know the whole story... He just said that the mass is all ripped up, the sails are shredded, the engines gone, but they are alive.

“He just said ‘We are alive. Your father is not going to die like that, girl’.”

Moore said she had no other details, but her father promised to call her back as soon as he had his phone charged.”

The couple, who live in St Lucia, left there Saturday for a routine sail to Barbados, but went missing, and attempts by marine authorities in Martinique, St Lucia and Barbados were unsuccessful.

The children had appealed for anyone in the surrounding islands with access to boats, light aircraft or helicopters to join in the search as the yacht might have been drifting. (GC)

Re: svserenity missing...

After last year's string of yachts missing, presumed lost, it is rather refreshing to hear of a happy outcome.
