Not really cruising news on the scale we normally experience, but still of interest similar to the recent US Navy follies.

Maybe this time heads really will roll. . . . .

Hmmm perhaps someone put it in gear. Don't they know these yachts are just supposed to look at while they are on anchor?

I've spent quite a bit of time on quite a few different superyachts - and I may or may not have spent time on Serene, I'm not at liberty to discuss that But it's amazing to me that something like this could happen with all the technology they have on board. Something had to go pretty badly wrong for that to happen.

Now other disasters like electrical fire, plumbing breach, or running out of Cognac, I could understand.

Exactly, heavy on technology, light on seamanship and basics. I only rely on electronics for depth indications, everything else is old school.

More boats have been lost using "old school" navigation than new electronic systems. Sound navigation requires data from 3 different sources, old or new. "Accidents" will (and do) still happen, for whatever reason. Tiredness, poor training, mechanical or electrical failures, stupidly, none of us are exempt from this completely. People, especially online, seem to me to be very quick to judge. Next time, it might be you - or, worse, me!

Exactly.

I've dodged many rocks that don't appear on the charts, plenty of close calls, anyone out actually cruising about will know this. Stuff happens.... usually resulting from a cascade of seemingly unrelated events and malfunctions.

Which is why we carry insurance.

Not being judgmental, but please advise from what source you have secured your facts.

Under old school it was very rare for the Navy to find themselves in todays predicament. More real world, and less tech, creates better sailors. Tech creates a false sense of security. Computers and the like provide a video game environment to life in all areas these days. While necessary, they are still not as smart as a well trained and aware sailor, especially relating to ever changing and current conditions.

Requires some interpretation:

navigational track error = tried to take a short cut or was simply not paying attention

propulsion failure = what the captain blamed it on after the short cut did not work out as planned

Yeah, I don't think "going old school" on a 134 meter ship is advised.
