When I drop hook I'm pretty damn tired. I always seem to be able to drop hook. The only thing that's waking me is the chain locker making a bad noise.. Sailing is to much fun to get upset about.

That's craziness. Anybody can claim anything including space. That's why laws are enacted and wars are fought.

I just don't want anyone boarding my boat without my permission. Or waking me up for no good reason.

That's why the laws were changed recently in Florida because in some communities the local police got quite a bad reputation for making people move their boats or else.

There was a very long and balanced article in Soundings this month on this issue. Apparently Soundings even interviewed Karlton himself as there are many quotes from him.

Not far to the north is Ft Lauderdale and here is one of the landowner's opinion of boaters on the ICW. He might be related to Karlton . . .

Looked for the finger last fall, think it's gone.

What's there to balance? One side was wrong (Karlton) and the other side was right (the boaters). Haven't read the article yet so I can't really comment, but Florida law is clear--no government can limit access to public waterways by restricting the rights of boaters to anchor. Karlton's complaints about people stealing things and noise, or whatever, may or may not be true and valid, but they have nothing to do with the rights of boaters who want to anchor there. In other words, you can't privatize public waters just because you don't like what goes on there. If anyone wants to know more about anchoring rights and how to preserve them click on the link in my sig.

Yeah they said that. Anchor away where ever you want!! Cheers!

Are you saying the other side has zero that should be published or presented on their side?

I saw an episode of COPs that showed some disgusting boaters anchored (living on the boat) in a FL waterway. If they showed up in my backyard I would be pissed too.

But all boaters are perfect right?

The roads are public but you can't stop your car wherever you want.

No you can't, but this was a legal "parking" place for boats, there is no evidence the boater involved was doing anything other than anchoring, and he is an experienced boater with a seaworthy vessel. Sure, if someone is polluting, breaking the law, or stealing things the police should be called and something should be done.

The analogy that is appropriate is you park your car legally on my street, your car is normal looking and perfectly legal, and I call the cops and tell them I want you moved because I don't like looking out at cars parked there.

I agree

But certainly you must allow for the possibility that some where, sometime - boaters might be gross and drunk and annoying in general - and even some might be thieves! I know it's hard to believe. : )

If it is really true that he has had 4 PWC stolen - he is probably foaming at the teeth. Not saying it is true just saying I have no idea so I can allow for the possibility that it MIGHT be true.

The episode of Cops I saw - showed 3 drunk guys all with no teeth - dumping sewage directly overboard and the owner just got back from a beer run. When I saw it the first thing I thought of was this thread on the forum. All they got was a ticket - and with no land address - I doubt they will ever pay it.

Obviously this Karlton has taken it to extremes. Not saying I agree with him, but he has some thing to say on the issue (hence my balanced - as in it showed both sides - description of the article)

If enough people start feeling like him - I am sure they can find a way to regulate the waterways
