It's unfortunate in a way, but predictable more than anything. For most places that restrict access of their content, it's usually about revenue.
Internet revenue is derived on a 'per click' basis for advertisements, and each click is worth more or less based (essentially) on the
income of the user.
So if you're in the
Philippines like me, where the median
income is something like $4,000/household/year, your average clicks from Filipino
computers aren't likely to be worth as much as those from the
USA, where the income is north of $40,000/year.
Other times it's simply a desperate, last-ditch
power grab by the publishing networks to hold onto their content. The 'Big Three' in the
USA (CBS/NBC/ABC) are notorious for restricting access to their content on the internet, because they understand that the medium is eventually going to kill their entire business model, let alone their company.
