SF Bay Rendevous

Check the charts, China Camp is on the west side of San Pablo Bay.. Its protected by the hills to the west and Pt. San Pablo. If you need more water, you just move further out into the bay, or further south tword McNears Beach. The last time we were out there, we found a deep channel that lead south tword the pier at McNears Beach.. anchored in the deep area and were about 50 yards off the shore and just south of China Camp.. While we were there, ( for 2 weeks) we saw a number of sailboats come in, drop anchor, and leave the next morning..
About 50 yards off shore, we showed 15 feet of water. There is a tidal flow through the area and we did notice that boats were swapping ends every 6 hours or so. When I went in I droped bow and stern, north and south so we just sat in one direction. This time in we'll just set one and swing with everyone else..
We've got plenty of time so the next time your down for the weekend, take a sail out there.. Its not that far out of the bay.

Just for gigles I'll run down there within the next couple weeks. I'm up in Stockton at the present but we've been ichin to get out for awhile and its only a days sail from here.. And on the way back up I'll get the chance to try out my new Kite....

Don't have charts of the Bay area. I'll have to pick some up when I get the boat down to SF. Then again I might just sail the main part of the Bay and not worry about it too much.

Yep, it's in feet (MLLW), sorry I should have mentioned that... The blue shaded water shows the 1 fathom line.

I just checked the tide tables for that weekend at Point San Pedro:

The predicted low tides:
For 7/10 is +1.87 feet at 12:45 local.
For 7/11 is +2.45 feet at 13:30.
For 7/12 is +0.58 feet at 03:30 and +2.89 feet at 14:30.

Looks like we'll need to stay on the border between McNears and China Camp then. I draw 6'1. Besides last time I went to McNears they had a pretty nice swimming pool. But that is going back a long time.

Thanks for all the work on this ---- we're a'gonna be there (if we are still in the boatyard by then, I will steal a friend's boat! But, we should be free of there in a few days.....)

I suspect the deeper draft boats are all going to go for that channel towards McNears, and we'll all need good swing room, so guess that'll probably be our "epicenter"

We sailed there to China Camp last Sun and anchored off the pier in about 6-ft at mid tide, swung all night to the CQR fine. When raising anchor Mon (Memorial Day) about noon I noticed the boat not moving forward but the anchor coming toward us! Yup, mis-calculated the minus tide a bit and we were aground! But the soft ooze of mud bottom not only let the CQR come aboard (chain caked in mud) but we easily powered out a bit to deeper water.
Notes:
Lots of room for boats (10 when we were there)
Gradual sloping bottom
Will swing with change of tide
Cross wind normal
Check for minus tide :-)

Hi Squeaks:

I was thinking of going there myself but did a circuit around Angelinstead when the crew was late. Good work on the reconoiter(sp?). What do you draw? I draw a little over 6' I think I'll try and stay closer to the McNear's side. The kids will probably want to use the pool there.

I draw 4ft, 6in. At 6ft you'll have to row those kids a bit further :-)
