Difficult to reconcile "blind" and "captain."

Turning "left" was a clue for me. What experienced captain
would explain a maneuver as "turning left."
He was effectively a passenger on the boat and appears to have lacked competent help. It was gracious of him to accept full blame for the accident
, but IMHO had more to do with trying to making his crew feel less guilty than who had the actual responsibility for running aground.
