San Diego => Panama in Early January

Are the winds good for sailing from San Diego to Panama Canal in early Jan?

Re: Panama Canal passage

You might want to pick up a copy of World Cruising Routes — JimmyCornell.com so you'll have the best information available wherever in the world you're sailing.

I sailed to Hawaii in December from San Diego and had favorable winds but almost half of it from the South. It is not the most ideal time to head that direction but is still possible.

Re: San Diego => Panama in Early January

downhill in jan is the perfect time, the window lasts one month longer-- feb is spozed to be last gasp. i left in april.
some years this is not true. this year the storms of the pacific lasted until well into may. i scooted on a prefrontal wind to salsipuedes.
some years thereis not a lot of winter storm activity. some years is miserably stormy. gotta pick your time well./ this year storms were still passing thru to ensenada until well into may.
what kind of boat? could be interesting in a smaller one, but fun. make many stops.

Done it once, left SD Jan 15, had a good trip. Keep an eye on the forecasts for the Tehauntepec and Papagayo winds--any wind with a name is worth your respect.
