Saw this on the CBC last night.

The reporter wondered why they didn't call for rescue, probably didn't want to lose the boat.

True Salty.. and he likely didn't have a B1/B2 to be able to enter anywhere along the E. Seaboard..

Not necessarily. I have personally helped a number of fellow sailors out of trouble, Actually purchased a BA ticket to Sweden for a young lad who ran into problem in a small boat. Surprisingly, payment came back 3 yrs later. Plumbelly's new bowsprit, gaff boom and main boom repair were done for free in my workshop whilst I was gutting and re- building Bluestocking. Maybe they rode the Stream north. It is surprising how many yachts end up here with only a plotting chart onboard. Bermuda not shown. Lent extensive help to a Bowman 40 from Florida, enroute to UK that got pushed in here. No charts.

Well it looks like they will need some help. Immigration doesn't know what to do with them because they are flat broke and need to do $75K worth of repairs. The report said the captain wants to work to get the money for repairs. Not sure if the govt will allow that.

the boat only looks like its worth a case of beer and if he has to raise 75k to fix it he may as well buy mine

Not an unusual situation unfortunately. This is what happened in my Sweden reference above. Bought him a ticket home , or spend the weekend in jail. Our Immigration is VERY strict, but we WILL NOT send an unsafe vessel to sea.

Just goes to show that GPS/chartplotter and charts are not required to sail! This navigation stuff ain't so hard!

Anyone notice how the pilot charts seem to be going badly wrong in the last few years? No westerlies for weeks? Very odd.
