Sail Around Australia Rally is a GO

So, if one sailed the Pacific Cup in July 2010, then made way to Tahiti, holed up for hurricane season, and continued on to Hamilton or north coast to join up with this in June/July of 2011, it would be a hoot to sail around Australia in a rally!

So are we..........(trying to work out the timing of getting there from here doing Pacific Cup July 2010 and then making it to Brisbane/Hamilton by June 2011 with that pesky tropical storm season to be negotiated enroute.

Tahiti is very expensive. Tonga would be cheaper. Fiji has good services.

When the Arctic melts we shall be able to sail around another fascinating island: Eurasia. Of course the higher temperatures will make for boisterous sailing at times. We had a line of thunderstorms travel through Horseshoe Bay two nights ago. A couple of hours of it, with one hour of lightning every few seconds. It was quiet compared to Southern Japan but seldom seen and heard at 50º N on our W coast.

Why don't we plan an Around Eurasia rally on the last leg of the Around Aussi Rally. We can show each other how to party Hope I have a cat by then.

Are they circumnavigating in the right directions?.
Surely for most cruisers, the time to cross the Great Australian Bite is at the height of summer. A time when the Highs are well south, blocking the fronts from reaching the coast and producing fresh easterly breezes . Hence an east west transit for this notorious stretch of coast would be preferable.

Indeed they are --- it actually is a really intriguing plan --- if you look on the Rally site, they have both a really detailed timeline of what sector when, as well as an overview showing optimal cruising seasons for each section of coast -- so, that is why they are breaking it into a full year to go around.......from any point.......so, the rally will actually go on for nearly 18 months as it starts in Fremantle, goes all the way around once, and then around again to Darwin --- picking up and dropping off boats as they go......

If nothing else, as this thing develops and goes, if someone can collect all the data, there will be a lot of good directions and logistics and local knowledge collected that could be useful for an independent circumnaviation.
