We don't know their course in relation to wind and waves, but they claim rogue wave which is also called abnormal. They tend to be much bigger than other waves and may come from different direction than most...

Re: Rogue Wave Swamps Cruising Yacht

Hey guys: with respect to calling Germany it did say a "rescue station".

With a satphone I think most UK yachts would call the UK Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Falmouth England (and have this on speed dial), since they have access to e.g. UK records for the vessel and know the best next step whatever part of the world it is.

And in this case with all due respect to the US Coastguard, I think it is more likely Hamburg will speak German than Boston!

Ring Ring......
CG..... "Good Evening Sir... Brixham Coastguard... how may we help..."
Me... " Incoherant Racist Rant......."

Take it from another English Teacher (ret): Never try to correct grammar on message boards or for that matter anywhere outside school. People just get pissed. Now, was the previous preposition after the conjunction used as an appositive, therefore requiring separation by commas? Hmmmmmm.

pirate Re: babalicious moderators ... lower case

In a rather unscientific poll I conducted, CF's two hot babe moderators were voted way better looking than mods on Sailnet or Noonsite. I haven't actually seen the female mods on those sites but come on ... we have the hot ones. It's our own Ginger and MaryAnn. One throws her thongs overboard, the other wears nothing but a big T shirt all the time. Pretty exciting food for thought. I'm thinking of a new thread: Strong Savvy Seasoned Studly Single Solo Sailors Seek Sarafina & Saucy Sailoress 4 Sexy Sea Stories N Similar Stuff. Rogue wave research ladies?

Re: Rogue Wave Swamps Cruising Yacht

I've seen people go out with not even a pair of pliers. Someone who thinks of a sat phone, because they can afford one, rarely thinks of bringing tools nor have the capabilities to use them. A 45' boat is a lot of boat and the conditions don't correlate to the situation.
From the USCG:
"The two-man crew of the sailing vessel Eva contacted the Coast Guard Command Center in Boston via satellite telephone at 1:45 p.m. stating that their 45-foot sailboat had lost its mast and was taking on water. They also stated the vessels dewatering pumps were not operating. Weather on scene at the time of the report was 25-35 knot winds with 12-foot seas. The vessel was equipped with a life raft."
I believe this story isn't over.

Re: Rogue Wave Swamps Cruising Yacht

Seahunter,
Sat Phones can be used for many purposes. They work great for down loading weather to a lab top some use them instead of the ever busy SSB and pactor. But I do agree that there is a story here, conditions were not real bad just right for too much sail and a knock down and maybe a crew not paying attention to the job at hand. How well a boat like they were sailing in could handle a knock down I have no idea. Who knows if they even had any plywood on board to repair cabin damage. I've known two Tayanna 52's that got knocked down and both came out pretty much with just a mess down below.

I hope you realize that this is a grossly inaccurate generalization? Sure, there are some rich idiots out there, but I suspect that there at least as many poor ones.

Why do you even make this statement? Do you personally know a lot of stupid satphone owners?
