Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' May Be Moved

Amundsen's vessel Maud, sunk at moorings in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut in 1930, has been given to a group of wealthy Norwegian investors who wish to exume the vessel and bring it back to Norway where they would build a museum around it.

But the Maud, which Amundsen abandoned after he and his crew failed to get into the westward current their expedition had been aiming for, went on to be historically significant in the Nunavut communities serving as a floating warehouse for then-owners Hudson's Bay Trading Company, and as a wireless station. And the communities would like it to stay where it is, and are petitioning the Canadian government to refuse export permits for the wreck.

Re: Roald Amundsen's "Maud" may be moved

Thanks for posting this. I loved reading about the story. The way that he christened the boat with a chunk of ice, instead of wine was particularly interesting.
"It is not my intention to dishonour the glorious grape, but already now you shall get the taste of your real environment. For the ice you have been built, and in the ice you shall stay most of your life, and in the ice you shall solve your tasks."
