Handling a schooner that size, that vintage (probably not the most up to date gear), for that length of time, singlehanded around the globe... Pretty impressive, IMO.

I'm not sure about its validity as an experiment, but it's a pretty good display of seamanship.

And, yes I think he will reprovision and head off again! Maybe is just a hope that he doesn't get infected by civilization.

I do hope he makes a few dollars from the media to maybe jazz up his boat (or buy a new Beneteau) and some good MEAT for his vego larder.

Over the last few years I have sometimes sent him and email wich he has responed to. I kinda guess it must have been a bit more lonely doing it his way.

I don't know many details of his "voyage", but I was quite excited until I read that he was basically sailing in circles just to put in his time. It doesn't take much skill to do what he did, just a very stubborn and determined idiot.

Definitely with the SA mob on this one!

Not too sure what you could do on a globe besides circles.

I suppose if he went round the clipper route 6 times in 3 years it would be more impressive. But holding a big old schooner together off shore for three years is pretty noteworthy, just IMO.

whallers averaged two and a half to three years at sea if they had a good trip some times much longer if they didnt.

Typical whaling voyages could last anywhere from three to four years. They commonly went around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa before reaching their final destination of the South Pacific. Other ships took the shorter but more dangerous route around Cape Horn in South America. Most vessels would kill and process enough whales to make the entire journey superfluous; they had to return to New Bedford or Nantucket after having processed as much oil and whale bone as the ship could hold. However, over time, the journeys grew longer due to overhunting. The longest documented whaling voyage took eleven years, from 1858 to 1869.

Why would you ever want your company to be affiliated with Stowe?

I've followed his drift since he embarked out of a sense of morbid curiosity and amusement rather than respect.

Dollars might be much better spent and any image you have in the sailing community
will be tainted.

The primary reason was due to the conditions that the vessel would have to endure during the voyage. Since we now manufacture the material the boat is made of, what better way to advertise its virtues than by allowing it to go out and be subjected to knock downs, collisions etc...

But also because I choose to support the dreamers, the adventurers, those that are not content to sit in their boat comfortably tied to a dock.

In my 50+ years I have learned that the only difference between most people that have a tinged reputation or not, simply comes down to whether they are willing to let people see into their closet.

Many that tout themselves as good people have many more skeletons in the closet than those that allow others to see them as they are. Usually they feel this way, because what they may have done they feel justified in having done.

If you go back in history you will find that most of the great people that are written about, adventurers, statesmen, generals etc... are not as pure as you had been taught.

It is an interesting observation that I have come too after these many months of supporting Reid.

Most that support him are winners in their "physical life", business and social life.

Most that are against him are losers, unhappy with the way they have allowed thier life to turn out, and blame others for their inability to succeed.

I see no reason why I would not want my company associated with him, I would rather support someone who may have had made mistakes in life, but are willing to admit it, pick themselves up and try again.

But then after all, I am a dreamer, adventurer, someone who has made mistakes, been knocked down and picked myself back up.
