Queen Mary II Deserves Some Applause

Here is a story about the Queen Mary going to help a boat in distress. Good to know conventions of aid still apply:

* * *

"Queen Mary 2 answers distress call off N.S.

"Huge luxury liner delays arrival in Halifax

"The Queen Mary 2 luxury ocean liner changed course in response to a distress call early Sunday from a 13-metre pleasure boat off Nova Scotia."

* * *

The sea is a tough mistress, but some of her adopted kids turned out alright.

Well said Blue.

I must admit it surprises me that they would take the time.....but good on them!

if they are only ones in range, or the closest to the distress call, they HAVE to answer the call.

When I was on Holland America's Statendam in January 2003 between San Diego and Hawaii, the ship made a 600-mile detour to rescue three sailors. After recovery, the sailboat was left to drift sail-less. Sad sight seeing the sailboat drift into oblivion.

I sailed on the QM2 back in 2006. I bought along my VHF and heard nothing until we were in the middle Atlantic at 2 AM. A small yacht had called to ask for a weather forecast from the "cruise ship" they had spotted. The officer on the bridge spent some time gathering and read them the latest forecast for the location and wished them luck. Very professional. We headed into gales the next day. I always wondered if the boat made it. It was pretty rough even on the QM2.
