Re: Polynesian navigation

interested in ancient polynesian art of navigation? David Lewis wrote several books on this subject - the best being 'the voyaging stars (secrets of the pacific island navigators)' in which he refers extensively to piailug. The most scholarly is 'we, the navigators' . David Lewis become interested in pacific islanders ancient navigation skills in the '60s and spent years travelling throughout the pacific seeking out the last living traditional practitioners of those skills with a view to trying to preserve some of the rapidly dying secrets of this art. He was a sailor as well as a scholar and recorded trips he made with some of the old men in which they used their skills to navigate between the far flung islands of the carolinas.
