Muckle Fugga, I quote his words in 'clearing the boat'. The army tend to desensitize things to make it easier. But you suggest they have the right to be pirates because they live there! Sophie, the cat that posted earlier, had 3 armed guards, who 'could shoot a beer can at 300m', with I presume an AR15. I hear the AK 47 is only effective within 100m, so that is a distinct advantage. Remember also that we are in a stable yacht and they are in a buffeting skiff.
And for us to be of any value, they need us alive.

The Cape is a cool passage, but if you want to get to the Med, there is a better option ;-) Each to his own. Personally I love the Arabs and their culture, and came specifically because it was the Red Sea. And perhaps even the risk was part of the reward!
Good luck hitting anything with an AR at 300m from a pitching deck.

Re: Piracy In Gulf of Aden

I have serious doubts if anyone on this forum has ever fired-off a round at someone at sea. So estimating how far away one can hit something with an AK or AR is all just bunk IMHO. Plinking is child's play and I fail to see any relevance. So keep talking and typing...with thousands of posts, you're all proving to be good at it.

FYI, the pirates come out when the seas are dead calm. You would know that if you had actually been there.

Because it's easier to hit a target than someone that's shooting back at you. If you can't hit a target then no way you can hit someone that's trying to kill you.

That's the relevance. Very simple.

When Somalis come at you, they do it fast and from all directions. You will be looking them in the eye at less than a boat length away. Your ability to shoot beer cans at 300 meters is meaningless.

Go ahead, slap yourself on the head again for me skippy. With 10,000 posts, you must be one heck of a sailor.

10,466/9 years x 1 year/365 days = 3.19 post/day

Not much sailing taking place from what I see.

Re: Piracy In Gulf of Aden

I hear some up market yachts are using modern deck mounted cannons. You could have brackets Stern and after as well as port and starboard. Modern lightweight special purpose cannon can be positioned for effective blowing skifs out of the water. For close quarters a molotov cocktail thrown in the back of their skiff will get their attention off you and onto themselves saving their own miserable buts.

Personally I like archery. A good compound cross bow can take down a wild boar. Just imagine what it will do to a Somali.

If the board. Hands in the air. To lull them. Then when you have one of those mothers close pull out from behind you your tactical knife and either slit his throat or stick it into his heart. Move quick and take cover from the weapon fire from his friends. Good luck. If there's 1 or 2 more of them onboard your going to need it.

Warning shot across their bow as the close in from you deck mounted cannon could do the trick. Could be enough to scare them off.

Last but not least. You need a parrot. If your going to have cannons and your blowing other vessels out of the water than you must have a parrot. Eye patches optional.

Nobody said about closing it... just a request.
We will start to remove offensive posts if it goes that route..

Re: Piracy In Gulf of Aden

Avoiding the pirate and AK whatever thingy's, MV Delos recently down around the horn quite easily.

Apart from the extra long distance, is it not just a case of timing with the weather ?

However, the following article suggests piracy in the gulf has reduced, BUT there had a been an increase on the West coast.
