Honestly, I think the parents only got invited so they could get the grandbabies all in one place for the first time in 5 years ; -)

And their idea of a super fun trip is a cruise... So I am puttin on my big girl panties and a smile and all my bling and going.

But LORD am I not looking forward to 9 days (admit it, that's a LONG time with any travel companions!) of being on a big hotel/mall/las vegas resort for all that time.
Do some planning ahead. Depends on the cruise. I have only done one (that's enough) but with careful shore planning you can a) avoid the inlaws during the day and b) have some fun.

We did 5 nights mexico cruise out of Ft Laudeerdale. The shore activities at each stop were the key to my sanity. Kayaking in the keys, scuba in mexico, mayan ruins excursion in mexico and one other shore thing I cant remember.

The evenings were usually dinner with our table mates discussing all the cool things we were doing and they apparently were not doing followed usually by the lounge/music/dancing place.

The problem with this of course was each shore excursion cost extra and the bar bill at the end of the cruise was staggering. I literally spent 2X on the shore activities and bar bill than the cruise cost including airfare to florida.

Actually I could have bought a small boat and sailed to mexico for the cost of that cruise for two people.

Everyone needs to do a cruise once in their life if only to justify the cost of owning their own boat...

LOL... don't remind me... I am trying to not think about it...

And I have figured out the port days will be the saving grace. We will be in Alaska so we have a small boat charter to whale watch in Icy Point, and kayaking and floaty planes in Ketchikan. That leaves 2 more days to plan for and then live thru the at sea days...

and I am NOT playin BINGO!!

My deepest sympathies and I think I'd have made the supreme sacrifice and let the offspring go on their own - quality time with their grandparents you know.

For what it is worth a friend of mine eventually became Master on a large cruise ship and right up until he retired reckoned the only thing wrong with the job was he could not push the cargo through a pipeline. A bit harsh perhaps but there you go.

Re: Packing for 4month cruise

I agree, the cargo through the pipeline was one of my best gigs in the industry. Sara, so it doesn't happen again, if someone else is picking up the tab, just do as my entitled sister did, and that is after accepting a free cruise from her friends, upon boarding and seeing her stateroom declared "I can't do this cruise in a windowless room". Her friends bit the bullet and upgraded her stateroom at 2X the cost. Needless to say, her friends never invited her on a cruise again.

Re: Packing for 4month cruise

I can't... they already ponied up for a window.. I would have to pout my way into a balcony and that seems a bit much, even for a spoiled girl such as I....

Ya know what's nice here? No one is telling me what a brat and ingrate I am to not be over the moon with a free cruise...

I went to a forum for the big ugly kinda cruise ships and asked what people did on their cruise and what to expect because I was a kinda reluctant cruiser and not so sure it was for me... and I got ALL this hate mail...

No one could even fathom NOT being ecstatic about the opportunity to be on this huge resturant casino mall las vegas revue resort behemoth...

And I was nice about how I asked!!!

Re: Packing for 4month cruise

This is where I have zero experience as I've never hired on as a deckofficer on a cruise ship. Some do have fun for the young activities, such as wave machines, rock climbing walls and discos. The food has to be great because even on a container ship, union rules still dictate that there has to be at least a chef AND pastery chef on board, our crew was only 24 souls and the food was excellent.

The "cruisers" are a weeird lot. I had a friend who was totally into it. Signed up for all kinds of cruises, new captains names all that crazy stuff.

The floating casino, restaurant thing is exactly my impression. I found a bunch of bored people, bored with life trying to find some joy. I admit its my fault but I totally didn't get it. There was one "species" that partied in the bar all night and every day they signed up for the "booze" cruise in port which was basically a 3 story barge that floated around whatever anchorage we were in with the sole purpose of drinking. In beteeen they laid by the pool drinking...

The other total downside to cruise ships is you are a captive audience. Yes they feed the crap outta you, I think you can eat like 6 times a day but booze is expensive and all we really did was a nice bottle of wine with each dinner and a couple of buckets of beer each day.

Oh well. If you haven't taken a cruise before you will enjoy it. In hindsight we did have a great time, mainly because we arranged the shore tours. I also won the "stupid passenger karaoke contest" in the lounge with my signature rendition of Johnny B. Goode. I cherish the Royal Caribbean key chain that was my prize - LOL

Ok, not rockin that either...

The cruising community is pretty strange. They sorta seem to live from departure to departure. Like the rest of their life is just a holding pattern...
