So you could say that each "box"/compartment is a sort of Faraday Cage and a GPS would not be able to receive any satellite signals especially for any "inside" (i.e., cheap compartments). The more expensive "outside" compartments all have balonies so the GPS antenna could be put out there. But I don't think I would want to leave a computer running outside on the balcony.

Or - you could spend the whole trip doing the "stand on the bow - Titanic movie" thing with your arms outstretched and a Garmin GPS76 in one hand . . .
I was thinking more on line of sitting in a deck chair and following along with the tablet, gps bug and a cruising guide. Then she can Try to figure out which inlet the blue ketch is headed up and which waterfall the people on the ketch will take photos of. Not something to do on hours on end but it would be a relaxing and fun hour or so when the ship was moving and you could still see before dark.
Packing the gps76 isn't bad either as it serves to navigate on land along with on the water. And it can be pulled out of the pocket for those on deck "what place or island is that/" moments.
Have to have at least one photo of the outstreatched arms in the little dress on the bow of the ship though. Just to keep us old guys smiling

Ummmm...... Care to rephrase that?

The electronic chat idea is a great one! Think of this as a reconnaissance trip.

Naah it's not the sailors, it's just the rest of "proper society" is too stuck up. People are used to living in a sociologically constricted, emotionally constipated, cultural bubble.
On another note this thread has has helped me to figure out what I will have to get for my crew as I feel it is my responsibility as skipper to fully equip my crew.
