Chernobyl has shown this to be the case. Long term effects to sea life and food chain could be a major issue. Hawaii will be fine. Calm down. Don't jump on the panic bandwagon. BOB

eventually the mountain snow will filter out the radiation.
i am talking about the here and now.

Chernobyl caused more cancer then you could guess.
they will never know the real toll.

there was an explosion BTW, didn't you see the videos of the explosions?

Look at the bright side. If I start glowing in the dark then I can find my shoes under the bed. But really Scoobie, Fox news is not real news. It's specifically designed to incite fear and controversy. Watch CNN BOB

Our submarine had a reactor on board and people would always ask me if I was afraid of it "blowing up". I tried to explain to them that it doesn't really work that way but no one every wanted to listen.

yes, the containment vessel.
why do you think they are trying to dump water on the rods from outside?
if the vessel would not have blown, the rods would not be exposed.

I rather suspect the doses of radiation reaching N. America from Chinese above ground nuclear tests was rather higher than that coming down wind from Japan.

Re: out of the Pacific ocean, NOW

I just wish that ALL news agencies, with the possible exception of Reuters, would just report the news and not try to make the news. It's obvious that Fox anchor's (not Rocna) are desperately looking for anyone to say that the west coast of the US in in danger. They keep trying to lead their "experts" in that direction. Still the "experts" won't say it. They ask so many leading questions until they can finally get the reply they want.

CNN is just a little better. The spin on the reporting of this disaster will set the nuclear program back another 30 years. Maybe that's their goal. I dunno.

Somewhere between 1 and 5 RADs per year.

Traditionally radiation exposure assumes a linear no threshold model, which means when they looked at Hiroshima victims that got a large dose they drew a straight line down to zero for disease versus exposure. Nobody had studied data for people that had received lower doses. Some studies are now showing a lower cancer rate among workers that get low doses of radiation.
1 RAD is about 1 REM (for gamma rays) is 10 mSv.
chest x-ray approx 0.1 mSv, cat scan approx 10-30 mSv.

Re: out of the Pacific ocean, NOW

News agencies are just full of hype trying to get high ratings.
They also said they were all going to freeze to death and had no fuel or water.

The fuel was all around them in the smashed up cars and the piles of wood. Same with shelter for a night, the wood all around them along with boats/ships with full facilities up on the beach. In the videos I could see water bottles and packaged food laying all over the place, and it's free now.

I wouldn't put any trust into the media. The people don't seem to be all freaked out. They've been dealing with disasters for a long time now.

As for radiation, dilution is the solution to pollution. I'm more worried about the sun. There's not that much of it to worry about, it's not like ash from a volcano.
