Options other than Panama Canal

I remember years ago hearing about someone transporting the boat by truck instead of going through the Panama Canal but I don't remember where and that was like half the price of going through the canal has anyone else heard of this and have any information on it thanks in advance fair winds and calm seas

Re: Options other than Panama Canal

There was a guy in the Rio Dulce that was hauling boats to the west coast. I have not heard anything about him in a while. I saw the truck and trailer once. I would want some sort of insurance. Half the price? that would make it $750? I doubt it.

Are you talking about the Morgan on your profile? If so, yes trucking is definitely an option. I am not from any where near you so I couldn't even guess at the cost. Less than $20 000?

No not the morgan I'm looking at another boat that is in Texas. But if someone is in the east coast I would do a delivery of my morgan which is for sale at a great price

Re: Options other than Panama Canal

The reason I asked if it was the Morgan is, some boats can be impracticably large to truck. I don't know details on how wide that is in the US. 13' max beam maybe?

I have heard of it. From gulf of Mexico to Pacific by truck no bridges so you don't have to take down mast years ago it was like 400.00. But can't remember where

Texas to San Diego is not an awful long distance so trucking may be relatively reasonable if you can live with SD as a destination. Haven't heard anything about the guy trucking boats in Mexico/Central America for years. Doubt you'll find anyone doing it.

There is no max in usa, you can have escorts with oversized loads which is real expensive. I am in the trucking industry. Have done 16x80 before.

16x80? I'm not a trucker, but that sounds like a very impressive load. I think you definitely know more about this sort of thing than me

Re: Options other than Panama Canal

Just loaded a buddies 38 foot Regal (power) onto a truck from Lake Tahoe to Alameda (Bay Area) about 250 miles, I think. Cost over $1500! Much of the trip is highway but many off/on ramps and CA highway restrictions to deal with. Phil

Re: Options other than Panama Canal

The trips from the rio dulce did happen, its a long way from the rio to colon so it made sense for boats under 40' looking to get back to Baja.

There were many humors of boats sailing up to lake Nicaragua and trucking the about 10 miles to the pacific. I have a friend that said he rafted rapids on the river below the lake. Sounds like a no go. That is where the Chinese are maybe building the Grand Canal.

Re: Options other than Panama Canal

1 to 2 hours sounds like Colon to Panama City. I can't imagine you could do it for even close to the cost of the canal which is less than $1000 for a boat less than 50 feet assuming you do not use an agent or have to hire lines, line handlers, tires. I am sure there are wires and bridges so you would need to take the mast down and get the boat hauled, get trucked (the simplest part of the whole process, and then get launched and mast put up.
